recorder effects loop

Hi all, was wondering how to use effects loop on my Tascam DP-01... is this something I can utilize once a track has been recorded? Or does the effect have to be added while track being laid down (in which case I wonder why you wouldn't just place the effect between source and record input). If the former, does track have to be bounced to another track to record the effect? Each track has an effect pot, and the effect loop has a mono out and stereo in. I assume this means that the degree to which each track is sent out can be controlled, and that all are combined, sent to effect, and return as stereo signal, but to where? Manual is not at all clear on this! Thanks!

Under "multi-effects", it says it is mono input, stereo output and you can assign it to any channels, but you can only send one signal at a time.

So you record your track. Then play it back with the signal sent to the f/x loop, and record that to 2 channels.
