Nice sound... I liked the drum sound a lot, how'd you do it? What kind of kit was it? Dang, I gotta make some money so I can build my studio and get me a drum kit.

Isaiah

You should raise the sound of the vocals a lil' bit...

My two cents
Beathoven

(P.S.: That sounds really professional!!!)

Thanx...

That's a Zoom RT-323 drum machine MIDIed to a Yamaha MD-8 minidisc.
This track was recorded in my bedroom. I did notice that the vocal could be louder, too.

Dang, I feel stupid.... that's a pretty nice sounding drum machine. Not that I would want one. :p

If you're thinking of the recent one (10ish years or so old), then I think it was Deep Blue Something.

Great tune...great jangly guitars!...great snare..
great singing...great scream....great tune....the most important part!!

great job!

you did this with your eyeball hanging out??!?!?

Hey Carmen,

I dig the tune, I am glad the mic is working for you. If I may suggest, you need to pull the lead vocal up front a bit. If it is getting lost in there as a result of level, use some compression, and it will bring it up front, especially if you use a photo-optical device.

In either case, I like the song, and you did a good job. Keep at it.

Alan,

Why is compression from a photo-optical device especially good?

A photo-optical uses a light souce to provide gain reduction, rather than a VCA, which uses voltage for gain reduction. The main difference is VCA compressors under gain reduction, and even in a soft knee ratio, work full bandwidth, so they squash out the mid and upper end frequencies, and even pump and breath under higher ratios.

VCA devices are really more of a limiter than a true compressor. The compressor was invented as an effect, and not a protection device. Those are called limiters as in "Brick Walling" which prevents signals from passing a predetermined level. For vocals, VCA compressors have a tendency to make them muddy. While they are good for bass guitar, and drums, and as a protection device, Photo-Optical compressors are really good for vocals, acoustics, guitars, etc., as they let the mid and high end pass through, so the end result is a silky smooth warm sound.

The light source from a photo-optical compressor produces a 2nd order harmonic distortion that gives it its very warm tube like tone. This is a very desirable sound sought after by many. Most photo-optical devices rarely go over a 10:1 ratio, as anything over that is really limiting. It is a device that you certianly want in your bag of tricks. It is not the only type of compressor you should use, but they are really good.

I hope this helps you.

My problem with this particular mix is when played at a low volume, the vocal sits fine, but turn it up and it gets lost. I'll just do a quick remix tomorrow.
I'll squash the vocal slightly with the VC1Q and it'll be fine.
Thanx for the input.
