Stop it, I can't breathe
One year ago I was challenged by a fellow Self (=my favorite band/artist) fan to record and mix a Self cover in 4 hours. I managed to do it. Here's the result.

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=2618&alid=462

This was the first time I sang in english, it's so bad I can't listen to it anymore. Sorry about that...but I thought, perhaps you guys are interested to hear me finally sing in a language you understand.

I was (and still am) thinking about remixing it, but that would ruin the whole challenge thing I'm afraid. But if you have something to say about it, don't hesitate.

I'm not responsible for the lyrics or the song, mr. Mahaffey is...

Btw, this is a song that's been put into the public domain by Self themselves so I that means I can freely post it around here.

Nevermind my post. I listened to the "See If You Can Swim" tune.

I really REALLY like that ultra distorted guitar(?) sound you've got going on...Of course, I'm assuming it's intentional, because the rest of the mix sounds really good to me.

My only bitch is that the whole mix is pretty squished...not a lot of dynamics IN THE MIX...the song has plenty.

Great vocal...what are you bitching about?

Is that really a soundblaster? Damn! You really know how to make the most of it! Sounds Good!

Tjarko-

Your arrangement sounds more Mahaffey-ish than Self's original version......if Matt had sang on your version (and played the drums :) ) I would have guessed your mix was his.

What is the string sound during the chorus- that slide is excellent!

Nice work for 4 hours!

( I recall seeing your icon now on Selfcentered)

Peace

Exactly! That what I was thinking: 1. I didn't notice that ALL tracks were actually CLIPPING LIKE HELL! (I'm such a dumbass) and 2. (of course) I used a friggin' maximizer to make it even LOUDER!!!

Argh.

But thanks for your kind words, Chris & Chris! :D

(the string sound is possibly just a string sound...mixed with a mellotron. Yep, I love those vintage keys!)

Hey Ped,
....being unfamiliar with "Self", this was completely new to me. Your vocals in english arent bad at all. ....now Im dieing to hear you do some NWA :D :D :D

4 hrs??? .....this is alot of work for such a short amount of time. You must have your gear wired.

Very nice stuff man..... and a fresh listen in here.g

hehe...good stuff...especially in 4 hours. Quite impressive. You have a great pop voice IMHO. You should sing in English more often ;) :D...I like it :D.

Nah-Nih-Nah-Nih-Nyah-Nyah!

Sorry, that's gonna be going through my head now for the next week. AAAAAH!

Luckily I have my son this weekend and won't be doing any recording.:D

Trippy tune, and catchy too. Mix needs help, but you knew that already.;)

Thanks for sharing.:)

Im not familiar with "self" but this sounds good. The vocals sound great!A lot of cool stuff going on in this with the talking and the interlude right after that.Heavy duty stuff man.

I think the BBS homework should be to familarize ourselves with SELF

Seriously, Matt Mahaffey is a inspiration to the home recording artist- he started just the way we all are right now- (ideally)catchy songs, loads of ideas, and no gear....

He partakes in engineering and producing all his records still, both his major (ugh!) and indie stuff

If you want to hear what a little hard work (and ProTools) can do- check out GIZMODGERY ( it's outta print, but Im sure mp3s are availible) the entire thing was recorded with tiny toy instruments, and the sounds are gigantic.

Check it out :)

I don't know self-so I don't know the song but this is great! You got the touch pedullist! Cool lo-fi beginning-nice key sounds-mellotron? Whats the big distorted bass sound-very huge sound I like--as usual your vocal sound and layering is excellent--I might agree about the lack of dynamics-its a loud mix for sure--everything seems in your face...But you definetely use the full sound spectrum--nice crisp high end and a fat low end...Excellent break around the 2:00 mark--the cymbals don't sound that great--gotta give some kind of critique---oh wait this only took 10 minutes start to finish--Damn you!!
