Sometimes I must have a thick stull. I'm looking at the manual for sonar 1.3.1 pg. 4-14. I want to record a drum pattern using my midi keyboard piano. I'm not a drummer, I play some piano at times but I'm not the best at that either. So I find the bass drum, and I find the snare. Now thats all I'm really going to be able to do at this time. I nad a few beers but that's not what's slowing me down. My question is when I record I'm going to have a bass and snare. How do I get other midi drums on the same track? I've been tring to use an alesis HR-16 but that wasn't working for me to much either... Maybe that's why I bought BIAB. I can get drums quick off of that. But this song I'm working on now, I can't find no way to match the song. Also, I really need to learn to use everything in Sonar. This cost a lot of $ and I want all I can do with it. O.K. I'm done, I need help as you can see.
P.S. I have read the post under this one about entering notes, and followed to the other post. Did I miss my the answer?

Flash - I'm not going to answer your question (cause I don't know the answer), but. . .

why do you need/want your drums all on one track. Generally I would think it preferable to have your drums on separate tracks. That would allow you to do things like: raise the volume of the kick drum only, or add reverb to the snare only, or eq the cymbals only (sensing a pattern here?) IOW, put each drum on it's own track.

Also, if you want explore the depths of Sonar, you really should be looking into Session Drummer. Programmed beats (complete kits) that will play in time to your song. I'm not a drummer either, but this makes it easy to get started.

Here's a thread that will get you started if you're interested

once youve recorded the kick and snare, you can record over top of the current recording. just make sure you have sound-on-sound instead of overwrite.

dachay2tnr is right however, you don't really want to put all your drum sounds on the same midi track just like you wouldn't want to record an entire drum kit with one microphone.

crosstudio/dachay,

I have messed about with session drummer but the volume is way down for some reason. Any ideas how I can solve this? Thanks.

Paul - Assuming you have already tried increasing the volume setting, you can try increasing the velocity setting.

You can also try running the midi track to a DXi audio track to see what that does for you. I use the VSC for this and have gotten some decent results. Using the DXi also makes it a lot easier when you want to create an audio track from the midi. Just solo the two tracks (midi and DXi) and bouce to a new track.

See I told you I must have a thick skull but, Everything you said here sank in O.K. and that does make sense about not recording the whole drum set with one mic. I guess once I have the whole set the way I want it, I just record the midi drum tracks to an audio track. And thanks for that thread, I will check it out. I've never been much into midi, but I need to learn. Thanks again...

Dachay, thats very cool:cool: It doesn't do anything for my levels but I can play about with the fx in the vsc. But maxing the velocity helped. Trouble, is I am running it alongside an audio clip of a drum wav file that is loudness maxed so its a little unfair in comparison!

I always forget about session drummer, I scour the web for drum loops and yet I could get most of what I'm looking for within Sonar. At least to track songs, to begin with.

Thanks a lot. Hope you enjoyed the NETS last night.

Dachay.......Hope springs eternal:) (a bit like my music really!)

I'm not a big basketball fan, but being a Bostonian, choosing between the Nets and the Lakers is like choosing between Lucifer and Satan.

...or the Mets and the Yankees.:D

Back on the subject, though, in drum programming, I get a lot of use out of the velocity parameter when I want to do a flam, or accent certain hits.

Yeah, I can see how velocity can be used that way, I just never realised its purpose before (and why should I....midi dumb cluck that I am).

On matters sporting, the biggest sports event in the World (apart from the Olympics) is taking place in Korea and Japan right now, the Soccer World Cup. And tomorrow, England play Argentina in a grudge match that both sides have to win. Each city in the UK has installed huge screens in central locations, people have booked holidays, gotten sick notes etc. so they can see it Live.

If I don't post tomorrow, you'll know why. I'll either be drunk with happiness.....or more likely.........you get the picture:(

BTW, you yankees did really well earlier this week against one of the hot favourites for the competition - Portugal. 3-2 to the USA. A shock result really, but I'm not sure just how much visibility there is in the US for your National Soccer team.

Hey paul881, I know I'm sure no midi expert. I had trouble setting the cables up again, been a long time. I was getting into it at one time but I found I could get BIAB and there were most of the patterns I needed. I'd just remove everything except the Drums and Bass and I had someone to play with. Move it over to Sonar make a wav and I was on my way. I've come to the time in my life where I can't find the pattern I need for this song and I have to make up my own. I really should have been doing this a long time ago. I really feel like I'm behind the times. Anybody want to say anything? I'm all ears.....

Humbug!!! :) Maybe for the citizens of the US it is, but as for the rest of the world, well, its a non-starter. Also, whats with the "World Series" title? What International teams participate to make the title a true reflection of the event?:)

Boy, am I going to get flamed for this:D

Sonar & Cakewalk <---- gratuitous mention of music software titles for when this forum was about these giants of music-making:)
