'Record Automation' greyed out?

I can't seem to get this to work (Sonar 2).
The control to be automated is selected and has the red border around it, but the master record automation button and references in the drop-down menues remain grey.
Is there a function somewhere that can lock this out?
Had it working befor, and don't know what changed.

i happened to be in Sonar2 at the moment so i tried some different stuff.

if you have a range set up [f9 (start) f10 (end)] and select (for instance) the fader in console view for automation, the automation record button (not the regular record button) should not be greyed out.

you know what... even if i don't have a range setup and even if i have the automation enable/disable button set for disabled, i still get the automation record button.

damn, sorry i couldn't be more help. i'll screw around with it for a few more minutes. this tune i'm working on is missing something but i just don't hear the missing part in my head yet.

i got the notes i was looking for, but i never figured out the problem with the automation.

A good man over at the cake news group straightened me out...
I normally have four tracks record-armed to get real-time monitoring of outboard effects. Had to un-arm to get automation to arm. Duh...!
