How do you do this? I tried putting 2 inputs through my Tascam Porta Studio and then with a double phone line that merges to one line input into my sound card and played but the volume wasn't loud enough coming through into n-track although it was distorting on the Porta studio. What do you have to do to have 2 inputs at the same time other than having 2 sound cards?

I'm not sure what 2 lines has to do with anything. It sounds to me like you're just having a problem getting an appropriate level. Did you try cranking the line-in level in the Windows recording control panel?

What outputs are you using on your Tascam? If it has a stereo line out, usually RCA jacks, try using a stereo RCA to 1/8" TRS cable. Pan one track hard left and the other hard right, and voila, 2 tracks.

n-track recording dialog has a button "record stereo as two mono tracks".Click that.Make sure you are actually applying a stereo signal to the LINE INPUT of the sound card.I wasn't sure from your post but your use of the word "merge" suggests that you are using a "y" cord (which may be only mono, count the stripes on the barrel of the mini plug-one is mono and two means stereo).
Get a dedicated cord from Rodeo Shark that is twin RCA (to plug into the portastudio stereo outs) and the other end a stereo 1/8" plug (goes to line in of soundcard).Good luck!

Thanks guys I do have a stereo mini-plug going into the line input (it has 2 stripes on the barrel) I did crank the volume on the sound recorder options but I got some bad line noise. I'll try the "record stereo as two mono tracks" thing or could I have a y cable and plug one into the line input and one into the microphone? or is that a bad idea?
