I would like a keyboard to practise and play around with. Nothing too fancy, but something that sounds good and has the feel of a piano and is under $700. What are the best brands?

Also, I don't know much about recording, but does having a USB connection between computer and keyboard give advantages you can't get from a MIDI port?

Thanks a lot.

keyboard would be a triton LE but it doesnt really have piano action.

what do you want from the keyboard ? synth ? rom sounds ?

USB is more efficient than traditional midi cabling as you only need 1 cable to cover all your communication needs ( atleast thats how it usually works ).

If you want a synth look at the new roland sh201 , supposed to sell for around your price :) and it has TI software interfacing for your computer.

usb midi in my experience tends to fail alot if u send too much info to the computer at one time. Midi cables have always been loyal so thats typically what i choose to use

StudioLogic SL990XP (About $299) + Kontakt 2 (About $399)....

Sounds like a plan to me.. You'd be using the keyboard to control Kontakt (A leading software sampler that will work in stand alone mode) via midi....

Edit: Not to mention that this system is easily expandable and that keyboard should last for years and years!!!!

I found some Yamaha keyboards in a store in my town. They seemed to have good prices. Are Yamaha's lower quality? Anyone have one or used one?
