Hi folks,

I'd love to get some advice and input from you about speakers; basically my current hi-fi speakers are about to give up the ghost so I need a recommendation for a new pair. I have a very old pair of Gale 5s (some 20-years old) that I purchased before digital home recording was even a twinkle in my eye, and I primarily purchased them due to price tag and their sound when playing vinyl (yeah, I'm one of those!).

What I'm looking for now is a pair of speakers that preferably don't cost the earth and will sound good with:

1. Output from my PC to use as monitors for home recording through my (admittedly ageing) NAD 304 amplifier. I play blues and blues-rock and record on bass, rhythm & lead guitar using Amplitube, an M-Audio USB interface and Reaper. I use EZDrummer for the drums.
2. I'm still a vinyl junkie, so play a lot of 33s.
3. Default I-need-800-albums-available-to-me-all-the-damn-time-so-own-an-iPod option.

The Gale 5 speakers I have now are floor-standing, but I'm thinking I'd prefer something much smaller this time round. I really don't know what I should be spending to get something approaching decent quality; I had anticipated around $500, but really have no idea.

Thanks for your time!

Rather than recommend some speakers to you, I have to say that most nearfield monitors won't be ideal for everyday listening. Typical hifi speakers color the sound. Also, how do you have the room set up? Most people have room stereo systems set up with the speakers too far apart for good mixing.

Good point, and I'm hoping to find some kind of compromise. If that doesn't exist, I'll have to rethink my setup.

As to where the speakers are, I have them around 1.5m either side of where I sit. That's probably a little further than I'd want in an ideal world, but there you go!

That is definitely too far apart for good mixing unless you are sitting about 3 meters out from them and have a well-treated room.

Try X-mini speakers! They are small but terrible. 'Sound beyond size' is so important!
