Recommend me some solid DIY mics?

I have a band comin in to record and the lead singer is a tech junkie and is always tryin to get me to buy kits to let him put together so I finally took him up but I'm looking for something quality. I'll probably want to spend around $200-$400 on the kit. Looking for a tube condenser but I'm open to anything really

I've read someone using the Aurycle body for a G7 w/ a Campbell capsule, you could probably also use a Peluso capsule and stay w/in budget.

This thread is a little old, but I'm hoping it isn't considered dead.

Cyrano, have you bought one of those mic kits? For the price, I'm thinking about it just to get some experience.

I haven't tried those. Stuff from the US sometimes tends to get very pricey over here, because customs sticks an additional tax on it as they please. Bill or no bill, they just decide for themselves what the value is...

But I've tinkered a bit with all parts I could get my hands on. Panasonic WMnn electrets are dirt cheap and a very good way to start.
