Recommend a small combo amp for studio use

I want a small combo amp for punk and metal recordings. The tone I want is not dirty, fuzzy, or grungy, but smooth (compressed) with lots of gain. Tube amps only.

Price range $400-600.

What should I be looking for? In general, what are the characteristics of a small combo amp that make it good for home recording?

I have a Traynor YCV20 class A amp that is wonderful for many things. It cost about $500 and is both compact and well made (tubes). You would need to put either clean boost or an OD pedal in front of it for heavy metal, but it is a very well made and beautifully sounding amp that can do wonders with a few accessories.
