recomendations on studio

i have a behringer ub1222 mixer and it only has 2 send and returns, but i have a compressor, sonix maximizer and a eq.So i was thinking hooking up the compressor and the sonic maximixer to the send and returns and hooking the eq up to the inserts to each channel and just change the channel insert for each instrument, is this a good way to do it?? iaM A one man band so ill only use one channel; at a time.I didnt know if this was the best thing or not, i looked at patchbays but i dont completly understand them.please help me with any reccomendations oir advice that you have.

Compressors are inline processors, os you don't want to use them with the sends/returns. You need to run the whole signal through a compressor, so you need to have it inline with your signal source. The same goes for all three processors you mention actually, so you might want to just chain them off the insert on your mixer.

so i have an eq, sonic maxmizer, and say i want to use them on guitar bass and drums and vocals, i need to switch back and fourth or would a patchbay be what iam looking for? i have looked at patchbays and such but dont understand them just by looking at them.would i say take my eq into the input of the patchbay and take 4 out putsd to each channel for guitar, bass dfrums and vocals? is this how this would work. and speaking of my compressor right now i have it going from my v-amp then to the compressor then into the mixer is this a good way or would i want to take these units in before i go into my v-amp?

You probably wouldn't want to run bass/drums and vocals through the same compressor at the same time. Ideally, you'd have a compressor for vocals and a compressor for the bass/drums.

What eq are you using?

If you mean that you would record bass, then drums, then vocals, and just patch each track to the compressor, then that would work. A patchbay would help make that easier, but is not necessary. I'm not sure what you mean by taking your eq into the patchbay and then tkae four outputs from the patchbay.
