My buddies and I have like a keyboard. We have practically no instraments. We are going to get drums and a guitar. Right know what would you recommend for us to record. Anything that is cd or tape. That you can mix and tweak and be ready to be played. I'm just the vocalist but i'm responsible for the recording.

Start with a 4 track cassette. You can do really good sounding things with that, and once you get your feet wet you can decide if you want to move into something else, and you will be able to make better decisions about what to get next.

What kind of budget do you have? Sound like a very small one.

You should probably save up and get a Shure SM57 (or SM58) microphone to record with - its rugged and will sound halfway decent on vocals and guitar (and just about everything).

Meanwhile, read this guide:

It'll teach you what all you'll eventually need and what its for.

go to guitar center and ask about a 4 or 8 track digital recorder, you can get one with a c.d. burner installed , look on spending at least 500 dollars for a good one, 4 track could cost as little as150 bucks.

I was just goin to say that since computers are rapidly becoming the choice of homerecer's you can get a small standalone recording unit for next to nothing, some go for as little as 150$ cdn brand new(4 track cassette). Honestly for the price, it is probly worth it to buy one, see how you like recording, and then upgrade as skills and money permit. I will also second the idea of getting an SM57/58, as you will still be able to use it probably for the rest of your recording life, as they never die, and they always have some sort of use no matter hwo good your mic collection gets.
