It appears I need a good set of studio monitors. until then I can digitally mix any and all my wavs with my software and use an old sony stereo cd player to act as a power amp and judge the quality of sound through headphones. The sound I hear will go right onto a cd. But I would rather have something better than an old (2 years tops) radio shack toy. any suggestions?
thanx

You DON'T want to be making ANY sound quality decisions solely using headphones.... you need monitors. I would suggest looking at Events, Tannoys, or for the budget-minded, Yorkville PSM-1s....

Yep..... using headphones will be more disastorus(wow... bad spellin.....)then if U used speakers, because the freq response with headphones is quite different than with speakers.

I own a set of Tannoy Reveals myself, and I love em..... both for mixin and casual listenin..... and they look purtee

No, not compared to the Yorkvilles.... (around 250 new, so if you can find 'em used....!!!) :)

However, that being said, I've heard the Alesis and although I didn't like them for myself, they are not the worst I've heard... they'd certainly be more usable than the NS-10s, but that's a very subjective opinion...

shouldn't monitor choice be non-subjective?

from what i understand the best monitors are vthose that have the most neutral sound and lowest distortion-> taste isn't mentioned here...

please explain.

No - Monitor choice is VERY subjective - bottom line is that you want full and accurate frequency range and response with little or no coloration as a starting point, but in the end, you still need to learn how to translate your mixes from whatever monitor system you're using to the real world.

It doesn't matter how good, flat and accurate the monitors you have are, your listening area will affect their performance as well, adding to the complexity of mix translation.............

In the end, it comes down to choosing monitors that YOU like, and learning what it takes to translate your mixes with them....

fair enough.

but that would mean spending loads of time and money, of which i got neither...
how typical...

thanks anyway ;)
