i'm in the middle of remixes and mastering for a new album i'm putting out soon....
and need a break from it.
so,

i broke this one out.

a bunch of guitar parts all over this one, i'm re-working the drum kit, and experimenting with the mix of guitar mics:

on the melody/solo guitars, i used combinations of DI (Palmer pdi-09) and room mics (ADK Hamburg), and blended them in a half dozen different ways, to experiment with positioning guitar parts in the stereo field using the room mic as a hard pan (mostely) and moving the panning of the DI part to create some 3d effects.

if you listen to this in the cans, it is easier to hear the effect.

would love to know if that effect is translating........

Without sound like a cliche, that was kick ass. Loved it. I didn't notice the effect you where talking about until about 2 minutes, then changes at 2:24, 2:40. It was effective, subtle but very effective, adds interest without detracting. Excellent. Great playing.

Man.... What a gem. I can't believe nobody has commented on this. Your guitars are seriously all over the place, in a very good way. The spotlight definitely shines on them nicely. Even though the drums get a bit buried during the heavy parts, I didn't care. Guitars sound amazing. Bass performance is incredible... Wow... Love it. No nits at all.

Is this gonna be on your album?

thanks man, i appreciate the kind words on this one.....
yes, the effect really is supposed to be subtle, and obvious at the same time.
it's almost like a moving effect, and all i'm doing is slightly changing the panning, and bringing the room mic more into the picture, then out of it, against the direct signal.
it's a very effective way of changing tone, and placement.
i've just got to decide how to use it best for a single placement method.
it's amazing what you can do with a good room mic track.

but messing with it DURING the actual mix, definitely can work for you, AND against you!

thanks man.
yea, i'm not sure why it doesn't get much traction, i'm thinking of all the guitar players when i mix these kinds of things...
i'm trying to put in ear candy, i'm using as many different mic techniques as i can, different gains and tones, really mixing it up...
i've got the new mix done... it sounds more open now, the drums are more kickin', bass is a bit louder and sits in the mix better (used a limiter and some choice EQ to bring it out)

The intro has a late 70's Jeff Beck vibe to it - cool guitar & funky bass I suppose.
Def. guitar ear candy for me. It's not guitar as in see me tug with high speed technical boredome. There's plenty going on to retain interest and to listen carefully to.
Excellent caper mate!

I don't know what to say. This was just awesome. For a while I was just thinking "this guy is really good at guitar, I like this sound," and then around 2:20 in the track I was like "oh, wait, what's he doing here.. wait a minute.." and then the shredding blew me away. Really excellent mix.

I'm listening in cans now, I like the guitar tones a lot! Drums sound good, hit hard, come thru great. I listened to it twice and didnt hear any thing bad about it at all, not even little nitpicky crap..

yeah, the beck thing.... he was a big influence when i was first starting to learn to play

i tried to keep that kind of vibe happening... then ramp it up at the end.
it really is a melody thing, for me.
thanks for listening

thanks man. i really try to 'not' shred. i'm more into melodies...but i do have an intensity that comes out sometimes, and this often gets pidgeonholed as standard shredding, which i do not do.
appreciate you noticing that.
