it was a demo i did back over the summer for my a couple of my friend's band. this is probably the thickest mix i've done and just wondering what you guys thought. i know the limiting may be a little over the top, but the guys just wanted it to be loud and didnt care if it sounded like a brick.

i used REAPER to track, mix, and master this. i used four drum mics in the recorderman configuration (i know the toms are a little low in the mix too, oh well, the band didnt mind.) I used a kickball for the bass drum and a peavy pvm-325 for the snare. i triggered a really low (40hz) electronic bass drum under the real bass drum for some extra low end.

i stereo mic'ed each guitar then stereo tracked a third guitar with a sample delay panned hard left/right. the guys had some pretty bad amps so i had to work pretty hard to get good tones out of them. one guy had an epiphone sg through an old peavy 15" combo with a metalzone in front of it and the other kid had a (get this) samick strat copy through a digitech floor fx unit thing through a fender fm series 2x12. it was a hassle to get the guitars to sound good, but i convinced them that the third track would sound better through my laney 2x10, so i at least had something to work with. the bass was direct mixed with a close mic'ed signal.

just wondering what you guys think

oh yeah the digital delay and whammy bar down to the floor are an intro thing

also, there are some artifacts where my laptop skipped for the drum tracks (i did them on site at their practice space and thought my laptop could cut it)

The drums sound like they take a few bars to come up to speed & volume - is it the drummer or the mix?
I like the intro.
The bass doesn't seem to be anywhere in particular.
I'm glad the low bass drum is in there 'cause all I hear really is click.
The vocals are a bit loud but indecipherable nevertheless.
Good intro & outro.

Great job on the recording and mixing man, everything sounds great. Thanks for posting the set up - nice to read what you recorded with...
The vocals are clear but unintelligible - perfect... "oh I think I understood "deep in the ground" there at the end.... lol
The guitars sound like machine guns - excellent...
The drums and cymbals are nice and crisp and never too loud.

The band is great - precise playing from all - pass along my compliments...

:) :D :) :D

the drummer has never been good at staying in time, and he can't play to a metronome. i try and tell him that he needs to learn but to no avail.

i am having the most trouble recently with the bass, i think mostly with this mix though because the guitars and kick drum just take up so much room.

i had to eq out a lot of the kick for me to be able to get a decent volume out of the song withought the limiter going wild.

haha theres actually two vocal tracks on this song. he did two auditions and he liked them both and we just wanted to see how it would sound. i used some chorus on the vocals to give them some more gut.

thank you guys so much for your feedback, i really appreciate it. i always know i can get an honest opinion out of the homerecording guys.
