just got my midi controller today. nuttn fancy just the maudio keystation 49 usb. ok now i open reasons...i select synths,drums,etc..fine i hear me pushing keys and hear sounds fine...the problem is when i want to record the sound it doesnt??? do i have to push a button or something. i push record then play to hear my drum machine..but wont record the sound that i press on keyboard! any suggestions? ??

hmm, when you press record and play is the play bar moving across the track or is it just sat there? Have you got your keyboard set up correctly in options? (Preferences > MidIi > Port).

The only other thing i can think of is that you have the midi sync button pressed in which wont let you record. Go to the bottom of the window and you should see "MIDI SYNC" (Its to the left of the tempo tool). Make sure 'enable' is not turned on.

Also one other thing you could try, double check your soundcard is being used in the preferences.

Hope one of those work for you!

Good luck!

Chris

Explain yourself more in detail
Step by Step

I am willing to bet that it is something rather simple, but you must state what you're doing step by step.

You need to go into the sequencer window - there are only two windows - and click in the far left side of the track that you want to record on. Record will be enabled on the track when a midi port icon shows on the left margin of the track.

As far as you not seeing but hearing drums, the Redrum drum computer has it's own sequencer and you have the choice of programming the drums a pattern at a time old-school style or programming them in a linear track.

And this is a copy of Reason that you bought and paid for, right? If so, you can get a quick start guide here.

Damn!!!

more help

I can download a sample song and i see redrum, subtractor, etc. in the sequencer window, so i push play and i can tell by color wich sound will start and how long it is by a color and the sound is inside a box that is colored. thats what i want to do so i can do a breakdown on the redrum at certain time and etc. Now on my song i have loaded in the timeline i dont see anything for the redrum column when i push play. i may want to do a break beat or chorus and want to stop the drums but i dont see it to stop. The other sounds i have i can see where the sound starts but looks like a barcode. not colored and in box like the sample song. so how do i see the redrum beat appear in timeline and how can i color the other sounds and possibly loops those sounds i created??? please help!!!

Read what daddy said son!

No but for real.....................
You're not going to see redrum notes/licks in the sequencer from anything that you programmed using the redrum sequencer. If you create patterns via your midi keyboard it will appear in the sequencer for you to fiddle with.
Once you have put together say a 4/4 bar, which might consist of

1. Bass line
2. Drums
3. Synths
4. Whatever else...........
You should highlight everything via the left click on the mouse, everything selected should turn a dark red color. After you select what you need, go into edit and click group. Each instr should have their own color code as seperate groups. Then you paste the tracks throughout the song deleting what you don't need etc............Once you position the mouse where you want it, you can quick key (I'm not with my program right now) I believe ctrl C or V (One of them) and it will copy quicker for you.
You must not have read the manual, I'm normally asking all the questions and I figured alot of this out without the manual. You're not rocking crack are you? Let me find out, I'll tell your Dad!

loop

i figured it out with the redrum...i just right clicked and chose copy pattern to track...now a sound that i record in sequence patter lets say with subtractor. how can i get this one sound to loop the whole way thru it??

Are you just trying to loop a small portion or are you trying to copy and paste throughout the song?
To loop just a 4/4 sig just click the loop button on the sequencer.
Other than that, read what I posted prior........
It's hard for me to figure out what you write, slow down and think before you type. I'm not trying to be an ass, I just want to help!

You might find it easier to just ignore the patterns and stuff and just put everything together down in the main sequencer part. If you want to play in the parts by hand using your controller that's the way to do it.

okay i have the patterns down where to stop a sound and break the beat then continue the same sound..i have that..but a simple violin or something thru the hole song instead of copy and paste everwhere. can i just make that lil sound just keep looping??

Listen, and correct me if I'm wrong!
What I am saying is: "Once you play your simple vilolin, or whatever else you want to play, you must make it a group. Then you can drag it throughout the song. If that is what you mean by looping it! You can't make a little sound loop through a whole song using the loop button because it will loop "only that part" over and over again. If you look at what I posted above, it describes how to play a "Little part" and drag it throughout the "ENTIRE" song, and you can delete portions you don't want. (Like for particular breakdowns or whatever)

That is the beauty of reason.....................
If you're a pianist, you can experiment til it snows in hell..........
If you're a person who can bang out basslines, chords, and whatever else, but you playing Keys is not your cup of tea. Then you have the luxury of playing a 4/4 (Or whatever) and drag it throughout the song and edit as necessary to its completeness.....................But you must have an ear for music and be able to coordinate well. It's like cooking, you should season to taste. Not everyone will like your dish, but those who have acquired a taste will continue to come back for more...........................

Very well put
