i just got reason and i'm not too impressed with any samples that come with it... so where can i get refills or whatever, or how can i make my own stuff?

If you do a search for "free reason refills" on dogpile.com you'll find quite a bit of demo and free refills and rex files.

You may want to start at www.reasonstation.net

Also, if you bought it (and didn't just get it off the internet) you can go get some free refills at www.propellerheads.se as well. All you have to do is register.

Also, I have to ask...are you just playing the sounds as they are and not experimenting with effects to make them fatter or enhance the sound? There's many different tips and tricks that can be done in Reason to make it good.

I just bought a few sample cd's off of ebay and over time ive just picked out my favorites and dumped the bad ones and i use them :-). Mostly just for drums, kicks etc.

Also theres Tons of effects in reason that can be played with to change up a sound until you get it just right for that killer beat

actually no... i mean i just got it, don't really know whats going on.

also, once i get a beat going in the drum section, how do i move it to the bottom to make it part of the actual song?

sorry, i'm a n00b, only used fruity loops in the past.

To move the drum programming from the redrum to the timeline just right click and select: "copy pattern to track" (or something like that...it's been ages since I did it that way) If you do this make sure to right click again and select "clear pattern" otherwise you'll get the whole programming doubletime. It plays it off the timeline/arranger as well as the dr. machine...You're better of actually just drawing in your programming manually. You'll probably figure that out later when you're not a noob at in anymore hehe

would i do that for like basslines too?

and what if i want the beat to be the same for a while and then change it up? do i make a whole nother track or whatever? or bring it to the same one somehow?

yeah, just create another redrum, make the drum pattern, and drop it down.

(*note, to copy it to the sequencer window, make sure you click on the redrum channel to the left of the sequncer window and then click on the actual redrum.)

for basslines. i use the subtractor, maybe a little compression if neccesary.

also, when you drop the drum pattern down to the sequencer window,
you can go in and delete individual drum hits. dropping the drums out every once in a while will really help.

do you have a midi controller?
if you dont, get one. it will make a huge difference.

Man, I always hated redrumming like that, but if that's how you gotta do it then so be it. If you have a midi controller it will make a world of difference. Then again, I tend to like hi hats that sound like I use an arpeggator (but I don't, I do that from scratch while messing up a few times).

i have pads on my midi controller. i still tend to use the redum more though.

also, i forgot...

insted of making another redrum to switch the drus up, just click on the '2' to the left of the buttons. thatll save cpu room.

so if i got a midi controller id just plug it in, then in reason, in the midi section, id just pick the controller and go from there?

pretty much.
you usually have to install some software for the controller itself.
and then read the reason manual to learn how to 'add' the controller.
once youve added it, everytime you open Reason, it will recognize the controller plugged in through USB.
took me about 10 minutes to get everything up and running.
i used Reason for a couple days before i got a midi controller.
i dont think i could use it if my controller broke today, it makes a world of difference.

would the controller work for EVERYTHING? or just like melodies and stuff like that?

If you get a midi controller and you're using Reason 3, plug the controller into the USB first and then load up Reason. Sometimes it gets picky about that, but once it's done, it works like a charm.

it depends on what controller you get.
if it has knobs and sliders, they will controll stuff.
the controller i have controls damn near everything.
oh, you can play drum patterns with it also, if you dont want to do them manually with the redrum.

That's how I prefer to do it....let certain keys belong to certain channels of the redrum I need to get a bigger controller for the sliders and all that, but until then what I've got will work.
