i asked this same question before and it was pretty much unanimous for spending under $300, that Reason was the way to go. Course not many people have tried project 5 yet so i dont kno about that one. My copy of reason is in the mail as we speak tho ;)

Depends....

Do you want electronica type grooves, hip/hop, rock and roll?

Well, from what I understand, Reason includes a fair share of instruments, but only support other formats through ReWire, which for me is absolutely unacceptable. Such availibility will limit the color of your tunes, and your creativity. Plus, I've read the sequencer is terribly difficult

I use FL Studio, and although the provided instruments aren't spectacular (with the exception of 3xOsc and the boobass, when necessary), it can handle all sorts of instruments, file formats, and audio files, plus it can be used to sequence hardware.

GoodLuck

I bought FL Studio Producer a few days ago. It's a monster if you ask me! The new bundled sounds are killer. Especially the new drum kits.
And it's fun to use. Very Important :-)
Plus, I can use my Ohm Force plugins in it. A beautiful thing.

I'm a fan of Reason.....I've tried FL too, but reason is sick as hell to me.
The synths can be tweaked to get any sound that you want. A decent midi keyboard will give you an expensive keyboard sound once plugged into Reason. The sampling and other fill-ins are off the hook too.
Can you tell I am a reason fan?

I'm with trump on this. Reason is SICK. but i dont doubt that the others mentioned have their merits..
