I recently loaded Reason Adapted Express on my PC; so far it's been a lot of fun. However, I'm at the point I don't understand doing any editing within the pattern lane. The Help section really isn't much help, and I bought the Reason 2.5 Ignite! book as reference, but they don't seem to cover this much.

I see there's a drop down where you select the pattern you want;
then click on the draw tool to draw the pattern where you want;
but then it seems to draw more than one pattern when I click, is there something I'm missing?

I assume by 'pattern lane' you mean the sequencer tracks.

These are multi-function and vary in application according to the instrument you are using at the time you go into the sequencer page.

To give an example, the ReDrum and the Matrix Pattern Sequencer both have a function in which you can string together patterns by number rather than flattening the contents into individual tracks.

Please post again and be as specific as possible about just what you are trying to do and what you encounter from the program when you try to do it.

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I'm in the editing portion of the sequencer (usually using ReDrum) and was messing around with the pattern lane.

Let's say I drop in pattern A1, then by measure 4 I want to change the pattern to A3. It shows that I drew in A3, but it also draws a representation of A1 behind it.

The selection and erase tools seem really "sluggish" when trying to manipulate things in this view. I toyed with it a little more, but on the whole I just find editing this way more difficult than editing the individual events in note view. Do you commonly edit your pieces this way?

Thanks again

I do, and the key to getting the bars to run sequentially is to set BOTH the left and the right indicators at the top of the editing lane to the 'Bar' setting.

The magnet icon is for 'snap to grid' and I usually leave this enabled.

Then select the pencil tool and pick the pattern from the drop down menu that comes up when you click on the triangle next to the 'A1' or the selected pattern. The pattern you select will be the one the pencil will draw until you change it --- that means you can have a main beat on pattern A1, let it run for 3 bars and then change to the fill on pattern A2, back to 3 bars of A1 and finish off the 8 bar loop with the alternate fill on pattern A3.

Ahh yes!

Thanks, I think a combination of you explaining that way, and working with it some more, it is finally making sense!

Thanks again
