I've been hearing a lot about REAPER lately (mostly good stuff), and was wondering if people here had done any real serious testing on it yet. I guess it would be best to compare it to other free software (Audacity, Ardour, etc), but realistically, I would like to see how it stands up to the commercial programs. Anyone have some good experience with it yet?

Mixed a good chunk of albums with it so far. When it was still in beta and only a few months old, I took it to Cherokee in LA to mix an album, in lieue of QUITE capable gear they had there. The staff was suitably impressed.

The developer actually listens to the userbase and continually updates the app every few days at most.

It really depends what you are after. REAPER is not as strong at MIDI as some other apps are yet, but if audio is your thing, REAPER shines.

Excellent news. I actually already knew about the updates; I've only had it on my system for about 2 weeks now, and it's already updated twice! I plan on getting involved in their community; I assume it's on the main REAPER site, or does he look at forums elsewhere?

Usually the REAPER community will bring forums of interest and specific threads to Justin's attention, but mostly he watches the REAPER forums themselves. There is a good place also to discuss creating plugins in the JS format, as well as a strong community in general about recording techniques, pc issues, collaboration and feature suggestions/refinement
