Does anyone have a clue as to what I am doing wrong here?

I am looking to have real time play back of ONE audio/vocal trak for set-up purposes.
I have play back with effects AFTER I record, hit stop and rewind but not during recording OR after initializing the effect (cakewalks default reverb jazzroom)

My set up:

athalon 1.2 gighz
256 DRAM
200 bus front/back
Darla (5.08 drivers as of 11pm)

I run the shure sm 57 into channel 6 of my mackie 1402
settings are up solo, up mute, trim at 12 oclock with lowcut down.

Masters l/r up to U
event PS6 monitors out control l/r
aux pots are ALL at 12 o'clock including aux returns
efx to monitor up as well as aux sel
main mix down
alt 3-4 up
tape up
assign to main up
solo mode up
control vol at about -30

Out the aux-send bal to the darla-right in (here I see and record in Sonar as expected)
back from darla out to the aux return 1 bal (I can hear myself pre-recording but without effects...only after I record do I hear the desired effect applied)

If that doesn't explain it well enough I would be more than happy to pack up the whole damn sytem as is and send it to the first person who could toss me a glimmer of hope. As it is I am more than desparate to pay someone damn good money to stop by my place here in Rochester NY and teach me a few things. (these things must be at least related to music! LOL! :) ) Seriously, I need a couple of hours with one of you guys who deserve to earn your bread answering questions like mine.

My ultimate goal is to record live miking my piano without effects and my voice with effects running through my mixer to Sonar.

Hope someone can help.

I burned a week trying to figure out how to take advantage of the real time effects for Sonar...what a pain. I eventually got it...haven't used it since because I'm on to learning how to do other things for now...

Here goes...

First...does Darla support the new WDM drivers? If not, your latency will be too great for you to use the effects realtime.
I checked the www.echoaudio.com website and they do support the WDM drivers. You will need those. Too bad they are discontinuing Darla24 support. If you don't have a Darla24 you may be SOL...Sorely Out of Luck, I doubt and older Darla will support WDM...

Assuming you can get those...

Bring up the Darla Console/Mixer and disable all outputs except the outputs that you will be driver FROM Sonar DIRECTLY. In other words, don't do any monitoring that bypasses Sonar.

Then go into Sonar and go to Options > Audio to the Input Monitoring Tab and select both inputs (only two ins for Darla, right?)

Then go to the General tab and set the Mixing Latency to FAST
(slider at the bottom). This can cause Dropout, so you may want to set it to slow first just to get the realtime effect, then go back and make it fast enough that you can hear the latency, but you don't get dropout.

At the bottom of the general tab is a button Wave Profiler. Whne things are sounds strange I hit that button and it resets something and everything sounds better.

Also in the Darla Console (I have a Motu 2408mkII) you should be able to set the buffer size. You will need to adjust this to. If it is too big you may get stuttering. If it is too small you may get dropout.

This thing is a balancing act. I would suggest driver your outputs on 3/4. Then you can turn the outs on 1/2 off. Then you shouldn't get feedback...

Good luck. I'm curious to see how you do.

By the way...once you get the real time effect, the next problem will be getting the latency down. Inorder to do that you will need to completely disable as many IO's as you can in the Darla Console. :)

Same thing with some progress

Thank you for your help.

I am so close I can hear it!

When I attempt to open that particular "template" I created according to your instructions it takes some time to actually "come-up" completely.

The lower activity status bar tells me to please wait while it configures my hardware settings.

During that time, if I use the mic, I have the effect!!!!!
I have full jazz club reverb through my monitors in REAL time without lag!!!

After it completely comes up, the effect disappears. :(
The CPU usage indicator shows activity to the red (even though I am doing nothing)
I hit the "!" to reset and while the CPU indicator relaxes I have no response from my system to Sonar.
No actual recording or activity on the armed recording track.
Just product strictly "thru" the card.

Am I over-driving the processor until it just gives up and turns off any "real" recognition of the card?

Anyway, I have to work tmw and then back home again to take another run at the thing.

I have advanced well enough to feel that it is possible to do this with this equipment. Just a little more tweaking.

If you have any more of those miracles in your pocket, please let me know, this last one was GREAT!

Thanks again!

Interesting.

I don't know how the template will effect everything.
Did you try just going through the steps from a blank new file and seeing if you can get it to work?

Also, did you try going to Options > Audio > General tab and pushing the Wave Profiler button?

Good luck,

It WORKS!!!!

Nemal,

I got it to come up yesterday morning!

Basically it was a "set-up followed by a total reboot" issue. Or so it seems anyway:)

I created the template and it would run only during the program start up time then figured maybe I need to let the whole thing reinitialize rather than just the program.

It works very well now other than the occasional tweak of the delay time. Too close and it fritzes. Too far and its irritating delay.

I am thinking of doubling my memory as a way to resolve this difficulty.

Again, thanks for your help. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
