This tune is a mixture of a few styles - rock/latin/pop.... It's got a lead guitar running throughout which is a little reminiscent of the stuff that Santana has done lately although I don't match his skills or tone :) .

There’s a few new things going on in this arrangement that affect the mix.

Mike has some different settings on his bass. The bass sounds nice on Mike’s BOSE 301’s, and on my TR8 monitors. It’s almost like keyboard style bass with its low frequencies. Well, we like it anyway :D.

The drums are written in midi and then played through a Yamaha DGX305 recorded to an audio track.

The lead guitar is my Eric Clapton Stratocaster with the mid boost cranked, through the clean channel of my Marshall JCM900; the preamp gain turned up to about 75%.

Both rhythm guitars are done with my Kramer Imperial with 40% gain through the Marshall. All guitars are mic’ed with an SM57.

Vocals are done through a Rode NTK with some mild compression and some automation.

The tracks were all recorded onto ADAT then downloaded into Sonar using an Alesis IO/26.

I’m mixing this in the computer and I’ve now got a four band eq, parametric style, with variable frequency and shelving on each channel (although I used it sparingly).

The entire mix is sent through a PCM80 for reverb and a Triple C for compression.

Let me know what you think once you have a chance to listen…..

For some reason, the title made me think of a cheezy 80's band. This was of course way better than that. I'm not too keen on the bass, I think it needs more growl, but if you guys like it, that's fine. It's working in this mix.

Nice guitar tone. Of course, it's Marshall! :D

No nits from me, man. Good stuff as always. :)

Really nice tune Gerry, the music reminds me of a cross of the Atlanta Rhythm Section and the Australian band Little River Band with the vocals similar to the Little River Band I think.
The Bass is a bit flat sounding-maybe some more mids would liven it up.
The chorus lyrics seem like you are having to rush to get the words in there-the guitars sound very good on there, congrats on another great song...:D

Thanks Eddie and Tony.... ! Glad you like the tune, I may have to look into the bass if you think it needs more punch....;)

Just a bit. Like I said, it' a personal thing. I am primarily a bassist, so I like to be able to hear little tidbits of the bass punching through. But this bass is cool, it keeps the bottom end without over-powering the mix. Maybe just a little punch in the 1000hz band would bring it up. That and a highpass at 100hz with a gain boost... I still like it as is...

I downloaded this version.
Sounds great. The bass could use a little definition but THAT'S ALL FOLKS!
The flowing lead work wonderfully well.
Congrats on the rework.

Thanks Ray - appreciate the kind words. And another vote for looking a little closer at the bass tone. It'll give me a chance to play with the software eq too...:D

As always, fun tune man.....straight up rock. Does have that Clapton vibe from some of his stuff....sorta maybe a Santana vibe also. Nice sounds....

Reminds me of 70's Clapton. Nice arrangement and the vocals are right on. I agree the bass is a little back in the mix. Cool tune.

Okay, I'll be the sole dissenter here because I think the bass works. I like the kind of bass that is felt more than heard. I would like to see more balance between the bass and kick.

I remember this song from before and liked it then. I think the rework makes it even better. Guitars sound great. On lead vocal, I'm curious what you have for an attack setting on the compressor.

I'm downloading this one... it gets added to the collection.

Cheers!!!!

Thanks Dogman, Riffmaster and Chili

That's what we thought too ;), but I think I'll play around with it anyway. I need to practice on Sonar.

The compressor settings are shown below....

I'm back, it's been a year, but I finally got a temp setup in a funky room while I finish my control room.

Cool song! the bass is pretty big and round:D it's not a big problem for this song and it's mixed very well. It might be a bit lacking on a system without good low end reproduction.

I really like this song as with most your songs;)

I'd look around at a very slight pull somewhere around 500hz on the vox. They have just a touch of that talking into a jar sound. Keep in mind, I'm in a new room, but I have played some reference cd's.

Some of the vocal last lines in the verses could use a little manual bump.

This is all very minor stuff. The soung sounds really good and I would put it up there with one of my faves from you guys;)

Nice job!

Great classic rock, Ido. These guys have way better ears than me about the bass tone. I just think it can come up a bit. Other than that, it's a nice full mix. Nice tune, too. I like the harmonies, and your voice is perfect for this. Right on.

What a great song, Gerry!
Great vocal harmonies you did there, and your voice sounds damn good..... Lead guitar could be a bit more up-front. Only thing I find could be better are the drums. They sound a bit thin and could use some variation in the arrangement. But otherwise real cool song and great style :D:D

Cheers

Nice song, Gerry.
Killer guitars!
Bass and kick could up a bit.
Nice vocals too.Interesting to "look" the vox comp settings...a bit more comp would be an option (ratio, maybe?)

Played this one over the weekend for a friend that was visiting. His first thought was '80's eric clapton.

I am listening on pc speakers with a sub. The bass (a popular topic on this one) is oddly distant, but there. I would prefer a more up front sound, but then again, I have no experience tracking or mixing this genre.

The drums are the weak link (if there is one) imo, but the vox kick ass. I hear your vocals getting more expressive and compelling with each track. Don't hold back!...keep going in that direction - I think it really works for you.:)

Thanks Freudian, Rami, joeym, Ciro, and Heatmiser

I think the bottom end is "filled in" but there's been quite a few requests for more definition. Compared to some of my older tunes it's a bit more "subdued".

Some of the vocal last lines in the verses could use a little manual bump.
Maybe a bit more automation there... I tried more compression but it started to suck the life out of it....

Thanks ! I'll keep it in mind when writing...

:D:):D:)

Hey Gerry! This isn't brand new is it?...or did I just read those lyrics before..? Man, it rings so familiar...anyway..as usual, it rocks. Your songs always tell a story of love and life...whether it be a bit on the bright or a bit shady side.

I love the Santana flavour of the guit!

Your singing is right on...as usual.

I would normally agree with the bass coming up a bit, but I think in this tune, it sits quite well in place, without taking the spotlight away from the axe and vocals..it's there doing it's job, just in a more subtle way.

Good stuff Gerry!!!

Sounds good Ido. I think the whole mix is sort of lacking low end. It's not bad by any means, but for me I'd like to have more kick and bass definition. Guitars and vox sound great. Good job overall.

One of you guys should start playing some drums. The programmed drums are the only thing holding back your songs. :)

Good job on this one!!!
I love the whole vibe, fo sho.
That said, I'b be in for some more low-end from the bass and drums.... but that is purely subjective. Your vocal performance is great! More passion than ever, and that's always good!

Peace!

~Shawn
