If it is an accurate reproduction of the Melody Maker I wouldn't want one. Nor would I buy an actual vintage one. I never could find a use for the sound you get from Melody Maker pickups.
I'm not poo-poohing the Melody Maker; an early 60's MM was my first electric guitar, and I still have it, though it's dual humbuckers and refinished now. I wish I'd left it stock, though.
Heres a cool video demo of the Melody Maker on Gibson's website-from the small picture on Musicians Friend I thought it had a P90-but its only listed as a special design single coil. Anyone recall if the originals had a P90 or not?
Play it first. They had some at GC a while back, and personally I didn't care for them too much. I didn't like the neck joint at all, and didn't really care for the way it felt. But of course, that's just me... YMMV.
I would probably buy one, but not from musicians friend. gibson send out a lot of crap. some music stores send it back and get them replaced, but musicians friend doesn't do that. in fact, I'm almost positive that for that reason, musicians friend gets the rejects from other stores. that doesn't mean you wont find a good guitar or 2 from musicians friend............that just means that considering that it's gibson and musicians friend, it's more likely a bad guitar than a good one. I guess that's just my semi-educated opinion though.
gotta feel the frets, Gibsons under $1500 need fretwork that i've felt in all the stores for the past 5 years, for $350 you can get something much better with a different name on it, epi, fender, etc, i wouldn't mail order it
