Instead of the usual "I'll jump into my last okay mix and tweak a few things" I decided to start from scratch and get back to the basics by using minimal instances of the plugins i use to mix/master. I'm trying to get it where I want it without the excessive use of eq's upon eq's and other plugin's (which I know is terribly bad form ;) )

I think I'm pretty pleased with the result so far but I'd appreciate another pair of ears to give some advice on what you can hear.

Cheers guys

Not the type of music I listen to, but I thought this sounded great. This was with minimal EQ? I'd be curious to hear what an EQ'd version sounds like. Cool little break at 2:01, very nice. is there some type of "tape saturation" plugin running across the whole mix? every instrument sounds a little distorted..but I like it.

I dig this kind of music. The composition sounds good to me. Here are a few issues that come to mind for me. That repeated crash part is kind of distracting. I tend to favor very discrete use of crashes as a personal preference anyway, but it seems to me nearly always when you have closely repeated crashes that go on like that, the result is a cloud of noise that hangs over the rest of the track. Maybe some find it exciting, but for me it is distracting. Second, I found the whole mix somewhat dark. The lofi, retro synth patches you are using might not have a lot going on in the higher frequencies, but for me the track cried out for a little more air on top. It felt like trying to pogo dance (remember that bit of 80s New Wave kitsch?) in a room with a low ceiling. Third, I would look at the overall balance between your main elements and the atmospheric ones. There are some parts that are meant to be heard in the background, like a little synth lead and that vocal sample. To me they were a little too low in the mix. You don't want them up there with your main synths, but they need to be distinct enough to do their jobs in the composition.

Yea there is a mild amount on the synths. I was trying to give it a hint of retro but not too much so it still sounded modern. It is EQ'd just not to the extremes I normally do, trying to get it right in the patches if I can :)
Thanks for the feedback!

The crashes have started to get to me now too! Originally I had planned on using different cymbals throughout but I got caught up on working out the other layers in the bass and leads :P
Good advice though across the board, I will look into all you have suggested and try and bring it out a bit more if I can.
Thanks for the advice Robus :)

My pleasure. It's fun to listen and comment--and much easier than writing and recording my own stuff! ;) Pay it forward by commenting on tracks others have posted.

Nice! I enjoyed this a lot. No nits on my first listen.

really nice, i'd sidechain some of the synths with the kick just to make it fly even more :) Maybe boost the kick a little too to make it even more boom boom

Thanks guys, the kick was more predominant in the original but I lowered it a little as it was a bit too in your face, I think it could be brought up a few db's though. It's all sidechained but not to any extremes, I'll try upping the kick tracks a little again :)

Thank you for the feedback!

I keep going back and listening to this thing. I'm really digging it! Is there a download option?

Sounds pretty good to me. Nice balance of everything, and the tone on everything sounded good.

The mix is a little bit narrow. And the song was a little on the repetitve side. But it's probably fine for the genre.

I found this song thanks to Robus and I really like it. If the sun was shining and people were partying with a stereo in their hand, this would be the song. It would be kick ass with more vocals! Overall, the mix sounded really clear to me. The kick could be more prominent at times, though.
