Re-wroked, re-tracked, re-mixed....

Hmmmm....I can't say I didn't listen to their CD alot. But, I think I first did this song before I even got their CD...
Meant it in a good way, not that the song's derivative. More of a stubtle thing, and maybe more in the mixing than the actual arrangement. Well, whether or not it's applicable here, I think that kind of influence-by-listening is a natural (and good) outcome of all the stuff that goes on in the clinic.

Rami,
Love it!

Please PLEASE tell me how you got the Bass to sound that way.
I am a drummer too, but my twin brother is a Bass player and I never can get his bass to sound this way where it translates well over small speakers. Clear / full / punchy.
Pleas have pity! Let me know ALL.

Tom

Hey Tom, Thanx alot for the compliment. I wish I had a secret I could share for the bass. Fact is, I think I just got blessed with a good sounding bass.
I'll give you my set up, that might help.

I have an Ibanez Left-handed bass..I can't remember the model and I'm not home right now, so I can't check.

I plug that into my Focusrite Voicemaster Pro pre-amp. On the pre, I bypass everything. I just find it warms up my sound to go through it. That goes straight into my TASCAM 2488.

After that, I EQ and add a little compression. If I get a good sound, it might just be because I pick really hard with a hard, purple Dunlop. I don't know.

I wish I could be more help, but it's a pretty basic set-up.

:)

Rami,
This might be the key.
He has a nice sounding bass (Carvin neck through) but he plays gently. Plenty of woof.... no attack.

I'll see if I can get him to try it with a pick if it wont throw his playing off too much.
Thanks
Tom

What I do when I track bass is I monitor so that I have to hit my bass hard to hear it while I'm tracking. I don't necessarilly put it "too low", but just enough that I have to play pretty hard. (I do that when I'm tracking drums, too. In fact, when I track drums, I barely hear them in the phones).

Where they sit

Have you taken the guitars down since the comments from Greg and Kevin?

I absolutely love the way the kick and bass sit together in this mix. I took to using a pick on my bass long ago; plus using flat wraps.

The harmonies that pop in are also cool. Did you somehow combine a synth with the voices?

Hey Archie, No I haven't changed the mix in this at all. I have to try flat wraps. Bass strings are so expensive that I'm scared to experiment and get something I end up regretting. But I do need new bass strings.

I don't use any synths at all....EVER!!!! :)

I double all my vocals parts when there's more than one part singing. In this song, I doubled the lead all the way through, too.

Thanx alot, buddy.

What a great chorus, RAMI.

A thought:

Do you have an acoustic guitar? Sometimes adding the percussive attack of the strum behind the distorted guitars can sound nice - I'm just struck that I keep wanting the sound to develop into something a little different.. Not louder or heavier - just different.

Maybe a clean track way underneath? Somthing to bring out the sound of the strings and maybe give it a little more depth.

Your guitar tone is great - and I'm wrong at least ten times a day.

That's what you get looking for suggestions on an already superb product - nitpicking!!

Thanx alot, casey...

Might be a good idea to add something to the riff as the song goes on. I waned to not build up that part because I wanted it to remain almost hypnotic...and also I wanted the bridges and shoruses to stand out more than the verse, which contains the main riff. But I'll see if it might nees some more spice.

Thanx for the suggestion, it always helps.
