Do it right or dont do it
Hey there, I was on a band some years ago and we recorded a crappy 4 song album. It was great at the moment but, time has passed and I now think it's a dreadful job... but we as a band did a lot of mistakes like recording with no metronome or passing the guitar to the mixer without using a mic and then adding a distortion plug-in. Never mind, to make it a short story I decided to re-record the entire album and here are the mixes:

M.E.N.E.C.E.PA - Fuerza para resistir

01. En la oscuridad
02. Muerto en Vida
03. Profanador
04. Reaxión

Any advice will be appreciated. Choose any of the songs, they' all have the same EQ and levels. Thanks in advance.

They're up now, and the [.zip] file is still valid!

i only listened to them breifly but they all seem to have one thing in common the drums have no life to them it sounds to my ears that you have way to much reverb on the snare and the kit in general is pushed back too far so the guitars are are overbearing just some initial thoughts let you know if i have any more

Yup, The kick and snare are a little buried.

The guitar tone is pretty good. Though, I'd get rid of some of those hard pans, especially on the squeals and the like (this is based on en la oscuridad, btw (did you misspell obscuridad, or is my Spanish just really bad?))

Any vocals on these?

I listened to En la Obscuridad. The guitars sound good, but they're burying the drums, also I might brighten up the guitar solo a bit.

Now that I hear it again (my ears are kinda fresh now), you're damn right about the kick and snare. All the songs need more "evilness", and I think the way to achieve that is cleaning some reverb from the snare (as you said, is buried in the mix), bringing the volume up and also raising the kick a little (I'm not a big fan of having too much presence of the bass drum).

What really surprised me are the comments of the guitar tracks. As a guitar player, sometimes I think I'm not doing the right job in getting the correct distorted sound. Glad to know you like the tracking. Just in case, I applied a litle raise in the upper highs to add more bite; other than that, those tracks are untouched.

With some luck, I will be recording vocals next week so I make all those tweaks when I have all the "instruments" together.

As a note apart, you can write "obscuridad" and "oscuridad" indistincly, they're the same. The trend is to get rif of the "b" but some people still uses it.

Very Very good palming (love it), which requires a good understanding of distortion, but be aware that there is also a point where distortion starts to pillow on rhythm (sometimes).

Listening to Muerto En Vida.

I think the drums sound fine, but the snare sounds a little lifeless and burried. I don't think taking reverb off of it will help. I think what you need to do is turn up the overheads in relation to your close-mics. The life of the drums comes from the sound of them in the room, or at least from a little distance. Your primary drum mics should always be the overheads, and the close mics should just be mixed in to taste.

In general, I find that adding some reverb to the snare increases it's liveliness, not decreases it. If anything, it could use some more compression to increase its body.

Hey there, I'm attaching a remix of "Muerto en Vida"
Snare is more prominent as well as the kick. Sounds better to me, I don;t know what's gonna happen once I record the vocals, maybe I'm gonna have to do more tweaking.
