I took the advice from here and downloaded goldwave to try...I connected my walkman into my soundcard and recorded song from radio to my program and plays fantastic ...so tonight I tried to record one recorded on my fostex...so have song on tape and plugged my JVC unit to the computer to record song...wow.....distortion big time...any sugestions on why one came out fine other distorted...?...any help would be appreciated alot...this is hard to fiqure out...frusterating!!!

Indeed! Are you monitoring the input at all? What's the waveform look like? Chances are you're just running too hot into your soundcard! (line level may be standard, but it's certainly not very standard...ugh!)

waves from my JVC are in the red during recording and don't know how to change that...my feelings were same as yours...very hot from my fostex...it plays fine through my JVC into my big speakers in studio which are normally used for stage work...so might need to tone down my recording in order to get realistic sound in normal playback...i'm going to try a pre-recorded tape to see if it is that or not...thanks alot ...here no question or problem is stupid...later...Alvin
