What exactly is RCA and how does it compare to 1/4'' ?

Why two formats? How do they work?

I looked on the web but couldn't pull up anything that could answer this question.

RCA is a consumer grade connector found on most all home stereo equipment and some pro-sumer gear. When carrying the same type signal (-10 unbalanced audio) there's no difference between the two connectors other than the RCA would be easier to tug out than a 1/4" phono.

Also, They are also usually compatable... meaning you can go from an 1/4 inch output of a mixing board to the RCA in of a consumer amp. Or from the RCA outs of your CD player to the 1/4" ins on your mixer. Raido shack has like 1000 adapters and such you can buy to do this.

The only difference in function is that its easier to plug and unplug 1/4 inch, and all the stuff Track Rat said.
