my computer and studio are in different rooms. My computer has a cd burner program and cdr. I want to record a song I mixed to a cd. Will running some rca jacks about 20 feet work or would it just be better if I move my computer to my studio room?

Also has anyone had any problems or know of any things that can reduce hiss in a recording/mix. I recorded this particular track to a tape deck. It's a cheapie and I know that is probably the case but I have an adat lx20 and a mackie board 1604vlz pro and my tape came out very hissy. The hiss was not apparent during my mix much. Has anyone encountered this problem. It's not alot of hiss but I can hear it. The average joe (my cousin, brother and my wife) could not hear it. ONly my cousin did once I pointed it out. Is that normal?

Please any thoughts...

There's definitely no hiss coming from the LX20, so that means any hiss occurred when going TO the ADAT. I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty the Mackie isn't noisy, so that isn't it either. If your tracks themselves aren't hissy, then it has nothing to do with your recording chain.

Did you say you mixed down to a cassette deck?? Well, without Dolby on you'll certainly hear some hiss....

20ft is a bit long to run an unbalanced, -10 signal (a typical signal if you've got RCA connectors at each end), but try it and see....

Sounds like a victim of mixing to cassette. You could always mix the signal really hot, it will get so distorted you won't mind the hiss! That's not really helpful...sorry.
Did you use a hi-bias cassette?

yeah, i used a high bias tdk 60 min. I guess it's probably the cheap deck.

I am going to buy a cdr...or do you guys think a dat would be better?

I think cdr...that is my intentions anyway. To have a cd made from my demos that is.

DAT might be good for data backup, mastering purposes and the like, but if you're looking for something to mix to so you can play it on your cousin's car stereo, get a cdr. Many cdrs can back up data, and they seem to be much more practical (when was the last time anyone asked you if you heard the new (insert band name)DAT?

that is true. i just need something to show off my skills or my unskills. You know what i mean.

anyhoo, thanks for you help. I was also wondering if anyone is using 2 adats and if you upgraded to a bigger board? I am thinking about it but it's gonna be one of those future plans. I do want to know how everyone who has 16tracks is tracking to and monitoring.

I have a 1604(as mentioned above) and wonder how that would work with my mixer...repatching?
