To be serious for a moment, it is probably true that an expensive mic is not required. Rap is speech. Loud and aggressive speech, but speech none the less. And most mics, even cheap mics, handle speech well.

Do we really have to be serious? I was just starting to lighten up.

Yeah-- probably the same mics that get recommened when people ask about mics for rock vocals (the EV RE-20, Shure SM7B, and Heil Sound PR-40) would all work well, but I can't say from personal experience.

This thread is awesome-- people are getting all worked up about a question that wasn't even asked this time-- rather at the fact that it is asked at times, and even dares to exist :D

Are you sure it isn't this one? I mean, after all, it comes with effects built in! And remote control!

does that come in a stereo matched pair??

honestly, i dont give a shit about rep, because i chill in the cave and its plentiful there :D

im about to do some major hatin' right now.

this guy comes into my store looking for pro audio gear... he says he has a really good mic but he can't remember what it was called, except that it was a condensor and he paid a 'G' for it.

if i paid a 'G' for a mic, i would know the fucking name...

long story short, his pro rap studio added a Behringer FCA202 to it, courtesy of a slumping salesperson (myself).

what a pro.

he came back yesterday and wanted to 'get his voice into the booth'..

he meant a talkback system.

so i sold him a cheap $20 chinese dynamic mic, a cable and a tabletop tripod stand, and told him how to create another channel in his pirated software and just route it to the headphones but not to mix it into the song. ;)

what a pro. with his 'G' mic that he don't know what it is, and a behringer interface and pirated software.... oh yeah, and his new Mikhlalooksdkfj mic.

he was previously using nextel walkie talkie crap to talk to the guy in the booth... i thought that was a rather interesting idea.. except when they where tracking and then you hear, bleep bleep, yo wuts good...

Yeah, they make a stereo matched pair. Me too, it just annoys me when people suck at life.

Funny story, that.

my boss happened to show up to hear part of it...

he produced some major groups in the early 90's, he has like 20 Ampex golden reel, a whole bunch of gold records and even a grammy nomination, so he is rightfully able to laugh at him.

this guy was such a tool :D

Allow me to pile on. "rap vocalist" !!??? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Wow, can't you take a joke? Forget oxymoron, some moron moron gave me negative rep, saying "your favorite genre sucks too." I'm glad someone knows what my favorite genre is, because I don't. I like lots of things.

Okay, so this is probably fueling the fire more than I could ever know, but after reading through thread after thread of "mic for rap vocals" questions and other threads flaming them for being redundant it dawned on me.

A friend of mine uses a cheap ass MXL 990 and it sounds great. I can post a link to his stuff if you would like examples, but I don't really think it's necessary. I'm not trying to rep him, I don't really listen to rap at all, the point in this case (or any) is that it is not the mic but the performer and the mix, not to mention the preamps, etc... :D God I need to stop drinking right now...

If you are looking for a decent mic for rap vocals, check out the Neumann U87. Pretty decent I would say.

Isn't that what Jay-Z uses?

THIS should work just fine. :D Even for rap. Nothing else will work......nothing.

Yeah if 50 cent, Eminem and just about every other grammy nominated rapper use it it must be good right?

Oh that was supposed to be a joke.

My bad...

Wow... there wasn't even a question - it really was just a bundle of two threads - "best mic for rap vocals" and "What do you think of MXL mics"...

If only there were a poll for me to poop on... er, vote on.
