what is this?
Okay, so this is probably fueling the fire more than I could ever know, but after reading through thread after thread of "mic for rap vocals" questions and other threads flaming them for being redundant it dawned on me.

A friend of mine uses a cheap ass MXL 990 and it sounds great. I can post a link to his stuff if you would like examples, but I don't really think it's necessary. I'm not trying to rep him, I don't really listen to rap at all, the point in this case (or any) is that it is not the mic but the performer and the mix, not to mention the preamps, etc... :D

God I need to stop drinking right now...

Rap vocalists who are just going to ask "What's the best mic for rap?" (or more likely, "wutz duh best mike for hip hop yo"), don't come out of the hip hop forum.

That said, I rather like my MXL 990 too.

Thanks for the unsigned neg rep. I never said anything racist, I don't think, unless you're (racistly) implying that only black people can rap. I'm just saying that we get a lot of people asking what the best mic for rap is, which is simply ignorant.

Oh, and for the record, I line up Libertarian.

I am not a rap/hip-hop producer/RE, by any measure, but I've recorded a few rappers over the last 4-5 years. I got good sounds with a Rode NT1000 (largely because at those times, it was the best mic I had).

All it is is rap.

It's not like it's real music or anything, so just about any mic will do I suppose.
.

chessrock rules. i bet you get at least 5 unsigned, misspelled neg reps.

Sometimes it bugs me too that there are rappers with marginal talent who make it big based on marketing and carefully assembled image, but then I think of this guy and feel worse:

What are you worried about rep for? The majority of which seemingly came from The Cave.

If the questions bother you so deeply, ignore them. I agree there are an over abundance of the same questions, but I don't loose sleep over it and am not fanatical about the abolition of them.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to kojdogg again.

Is there a problem with rep that comes from The Cave? The Cave is like the ultimate stoner's corner at high school. I love it.

Nor am I fanatical about them, but whenever one does pop up it just... irks me.

Nothing wrong with The Cave - although it seems weird that massive rep points are obtained in there. Maybe I need to hang out there more :D

Maybe fanatical was a strong word, but you even changed the text under your forum name to "wutz teh best rap mike?1!". Seems like it's really eating away at you.

You should, it's fun!
Nah, I just changed it to that because it's funny.

THIS should work just fine. :D Even for rap. Nothing else will work......nothing.

Are you sure it isn't this one? I mean, after all, it comes with effects built in! And remote control!

Damn, I have a Sweetwater card too.....

Will this one work with all genres of music?

It'll work for every instrument in every genre, including tribal chants, bagpipes, and ambient electronica.

Allow me to pile on. "rap vocalist" !!??? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Most rap vocals don't really need a high quality recording. Most of the rap that my roommate plays has all these pops from the rapper being so close to the mic, it sounds dry and uncolored, but it doesn't affect the song.

So why the hell does it matter?
