Ok we re-recorded the whole song yesterday and I am much happier with this attempt.

This time we used:
Drums: Audix Fusion F15 condensors for overheads, F10 on snare and F12 on the kick this time with the rear head off and pillow touching the head, and tuned much higher, however you still can barly hear it.
Guitar: Vox Valvetronix, into sm58, into mixer, into line in on the computer.
Bass: MXR Bass D.I.+ straight into computer
Vocals: One of the overhead condensors into the computer, this time with a home made pop filter.

Although it's still not perfect, I am much happier with this version, but I would still like to know how I can improve for my next song. Thanks! The suggestions helped quite a bit.

For reference, here is the old version:

And the new version:

Hmm... sounds like your just using the soundblaster that came with your comp. Bad idea... I actually like the first mix better, although alot of the timing was off. The instruments sound very distant in the second mix and the bass is way too quiet at the beginning then gets loud towards the end. Rancid is bass, bass should be more dominant.

Also, no offence but it sounds like you're trying too hard to sing like Tim...

The first thing I would suggest is to work on the guitar sound...but then again, I'm really picky with that kind of stuff. I know you're going for the punk sound, but it's just too fizzy/buzzy.
Everything conforms well for that genre...nice job.

Yeah, I know its not perfect or anything, but I'd like to think I'm getting better, not worse  ...
Actually for the stuff other than the guitar, we went into the computer with the M-Audio Mobile Pre USB into cool edit and I mix with NS-10s, which might explain why I dont have such great control over the bass.

As far as sounding like Tim yeah but im not the singer so thats not really my deal...

Thanks!

hehe, just a comment here... typical punk rock lovers around my area have that setup .. m-audio and cool edit. great for beginners

love to say this, i like the first version better :D crazier, more fun performance.

and in fact it's better that NOFX's own version (and it's their song innit?... Rancid covered it, right? Big confusion, as they covered eachother.....)

Gotta love some serious punkrock!

Actually it's an old Rancid song that NOFX covered. But whatever man, keep the punk alive!
