Here's a cover of Robert Johnson's song Ramblin on My Mind.

Ramblin On My Mind

Let me know what you think....

I mean this in the nicest possible way, but you iz one WHITE boy, hoss... :)

I don't think middle aged white guys like us with day jobs and wives and kids and mortgages and 401Ks and stuff should be allowed to sing the blues of the masters... :) :) We haven't had any real hard times to authenticate us, you know?

The guitar work is pretty good though... The backup sounds, well, like uptight white boy MIDI... :) It's clean, tight, smoothly recorded, and, well, just completely wrong for this style. :)

This stuff has to be acoustic, and sloppy, to sound right, ya know?

You've been looking at my Soundclick picture - damn I knew I should never post a photo on the Interwebs ;)

I've paid my dues - you wouldn't believe the taxes/fees/tolls we get nailed with here in Canada.....lol ;)

Unlike MHB, I will admit that the background is indeed MIDI. It's played through my Yamaha DGX305. It was a present from my very cool little sister (the keyboard not the MIDI)

I got it half right don't you think :D

Thanks for the listen Phil! :):D:):D

You got that cheesy blues band sound going down fine, if that's what you want.

I personally don't generally like blues bands. It's a personal genre about struggle and hardship, something about adding a back-beat and a band just covers up and destroys. I thing that if you're going to play it you ought to play it with some intensity, which is possible with a band, but generally just really cuts through everything and doesn't blend with it well.

Also, you might want to try some hardship and suffering your life... otherwise, what the hell are you singing about? :p

Still, you've got some nice guitar-playing going there.

Thanks Zarathustra - you're right, blues is a genre that has a limited following. But it does endure..... I appreciate the hardship that the true bluesmen have been through (and I definitely appreciate central heating when it's -20C out there) :D;):D;)

The live parts sound great... but I'm having a hard time getting past the too-perfect midi parts.

I agree with everyone else, the vocals and guitar are good. I'd try to find someone to do the MIDI track with live instruments, pain and hurtin'.

You got that Clapton thing going vocally, good stuff. Nice guitar work too.

:)

Thanks Erich and mwthompson - my keyboard skills are a work in progress ;). It's just me playing simple chords on the keyboard. There's some quantizing to correct the rough parts. The Yamaha does have some layering functionality that is pretty cool though... I saved the tracks on the sequencer, did some work to them, then replayed back through the keyboard to my ADAT recorder.

Glad you liked the vocals and guitar work. I've been wanting to stretch out a bit on guitar for a while and this gave me the opportunity to do so. :D:):D:)

I actually like "white boy" blues myself ... I also like the blues without AND without a backing band...depends on what you are going for. Of course, I am partial to original material, especially when it comes to blues...because I think, each man/woman has their own pain and struggles to saturate into their own story of woe and hardship...:D

The one thing I kept wanting to hear...was some weeping from the geetar...I could hear that hankie rustlin', but you were holdin' back a bit of those tears..:p

I know I am not much help critic wise...but I enjoyed(as always)the listen very much ido...;)

It had a nice sound to it but I kinda got to side with Tru on this. I didn't hear you come out and shine in this. It sounded like a cover song. I think you have more to reveal than you put in this :)

Thanks Kevin, True and NYMorningstar! I will probably try a few different amp settings to see what else I can get out of my strat. Thanks for the listen and the kind words!

Hey Gerry, laid back and smooooth. I like the part where clapton comes in singing... hehe, your singing still sounds like that to me  Your playing is nice here, very enjoyable. The backing track does sound midi to me, nonetheless the vox/guitar mixed in sound good here. Good work ;):D:)

Thanks Snakedog! :D:):D:)

Overall it sounds good. I'm not familiar with the original because I don't listen to the blues. The guitar playing is great all the solos and such. I'd expect the vocals to be a bit more dramatic sounding. Again not hearing the original you could be spot on and I wouldn't know the difference.

It's not the amp settings, man, it's the passion, like I was saying... you gotta be BLEEDING when you sing a song like this... ;)

Hey Gerry, I know you have a band and a drummer, so there might be a reason you decided to do this with MIDI backing....But if you want a drum track for this, let me know. I can put something down for this week end. Don't feel obliged to say yes. You might want to move on to another project, which I can dig.

Rami - PM sent..... :D
