RAM-question

Hi all,

maybe a stupid question, but I'm no computer expert.

I record on a P3 800MHz with 128MB Ram, mostly on CEP 2.0 Will putting extra RAM in my comp give me the possibility for more realtime effects, or do I have to upgrade my processor for that?

The more Ram the better.....also 800 MHz is a little slow these days but it will suffice. If your mobo can take it, I'd upgrade to at least a 2gig CPU. You can get pretty cheap now.

Will all due respect, Stealthtech but do you homework.
There is no 2gig cpu available for any PIII platform. 1.4GHz max but there are only a few motherboards that support the PIII/Celeron with Tualatin core for that anyway.

BrettB. The PIII is obsolete technology and the upgrade path is very limited. Don't put any more money into it (hard drives not included into this equation). If you're thinking about upgrading your computer, start with a new motherboard and cpu (either AMD or P4, both camps have their fans). You'll end up with more for less money.
 
I agree with Chris on this one

I got an Asus p2b motherboard and its allmost 4 years old ..
(came originally with a PII 350)put a slocket converter in there,
soldered a couple resistors on it , and broke off a pin on the celeron 1000 I put in there (that pin was a short circuit to the gound) all thanks to an article on the tomshardware website..
and it worked...
my 4 year old mobo still in my pc and delayed an upgrade with at least 2 years :)

I seriously advice you to go to the
www.overclockers.com forum , and check out www.tomshardware.com website if you want to pursue that route to find out WHAT is possible with that MOBO
they also got a database of all the processors and succesfull OverClock cnfigurations ....
 
I've used an P2B-F for 4 years as well (used a PII233, Celeron 333 and Celeron 466 on it) until I upgraded my computer to an AMD based machine this spring. Great stuff.

But
1) Overclocking is not recommended when using your computer as a DAW. Stability is everything. And you don't need the fastest computer to do the average recording project, just one that is fast enough.
2) A Celeron 1000 is not a serious upgrade compared to a PIII800, and
3) expensive compared to starting over with a decent new P4 or Athlon motherboard which also gives a better upgrade path for for instance RAM.
 
I did'nt overclock
my celeron 1000 is running @ thousand mhz...
but my mobo was not capable of housing that cpu without some requirements so technically I only OC'ed my mobo....

and my pc has been running like a swiss watch for over a year now with that slocket and those adaptations ...

however I agree OCing is not the thing to do ..
but on that forum there are a lot of peeps with vast Hardware knowledge (not just regarding OCing )
