Radio Ready Song??

I wrote this song about a year ago, I redid a lot of it and feel this is my best work to date.

I have been selfishly been posting my new songs asking for feedback, but in return I have listened to quite a few songs. I am really looking for feedback on this song and am hoping it is good enough for public listening pleasure.

Please give me the most serious opinions on this song, maybe from some of the big guns here at homerecording.com can give it a listen and give me some hard truths.

The song is called "Just a Dream". There is one point where I think the volume goes up a bit on the vocals and I have corrected it since the posting.

I dont really know how to catagorize my stuff and what genre to put it in. I hate labeling it "Christian Rock" not that Im ashamed of my religion but that I have to put a genre on it. I write songs about what inspires me. Its funny that theres not a "My Girlfriend Left Me Rock" genre.

Well enough rambling, my personal opinions, I love everyone at this website!

Interesting soundriven. For what it's worth, the vox come out fairly low on these tiny POS PC speakers. The synth comes through fairly strong very slightly masking most other instruments. Keep in mind the speakers on this PC suck.

Thanks, just tonight, I normalized the vocals and cranked the guitars just slightly.

i don't have monitors or anything and i'm no proffesional, but i do listen to alot of modern rock / hip hop / rap and this song is definetly "up there".

also i hear ya on the whole christian rock labeling thing. its dumb but people need to label things cause it makes them feel good. :D
 
I listened to it....My biggest problem is that I don't think I have a valid opinion on this kind of music. If it was ska or punk I'd feel I could help but oh well. I wasn't going to respond because of that, but then again I know how it feels so here's my best shot.

Sounds up there to me too. It definitely compares to other electronic music I've heard.

The production and the synths sound pretty good to me. I've tried that stuff before and it's too difficult to me.

The vocals/melody are a bit repetitive...and to me it sounds like the level is not that smooth....I'd try compressing it a bit more? (not too much though)

Currently working my way through the songs on your page. I have four so far, and since none of them are the two that you recently posted about, I thought I'd write my comments here.

Gotta love contradictory opinions, but I actually think that the vocals are a bit high in the mix. Other than the vocals, I think the song sounds easily as good as anything by Orgy. The synths sound just amazing. I wish I had the equipment and know-how to pull something like that off. The thing is, though - I agree with Executivos. I'm listening mainly to the backing track because I find the melody to be a bit repetitive. There really isn't much of a hook in the melody line - all the ear candy is in the background. I like the song, but it doesn't necessarily sound like a "hit".

"Everything" - Melodically, it's kind of a rewrite of "Just A Dream", isn't it?

"Prodigal" also features that same melodic motif in the beginning bars.

"Never Knew": Now this is tiiiiii-i-i-i-ight. I like the hook.

You've obviously got the production end of things down flat. If you haven't mastered any of your material, I can't wait to hear what they'll sound like when they are. This is some of the freshest amateur production I've ever heard for electronic music.

But put more time into developing your melodies. Your excellent synth work makes for great ear candy, but a song is always melody first, accompaniment second. Try writing a melody that spans at least an octave and a half.

Good job, I'm downloading the rest of your stuff now!
 
I agree with Eurythmic...im listening on regular stereo speakers and those guitars are just pushed a tad far back behind the vocal.....this is concerning "Just a Dream"....either bring the vocals down a tad or bring the guitars up....regardless, its a very good mix.....

im listening to Prodigal now and the vocal seems to be well balanced in the mix in places, but in others it gets buried a tad.....
for instance from :47 to 1:11 theres a synth part stepping all over the vocal.....this is more of an arrangement issue in my book....is that part necessary and if it is, tuck it back some....lower the volume, pan it, do something...again, overall a very decent mix......

Im not a big fan of the techno/electonica thing so its hard to say if this is radio quality.......I guess it is high enough quality for radio......i think the one thing Id recommend is better use of panning and EQ to get parts away from vocals, especially heavy guitar parts and heavy synth parts......

Its funny you(Jason) talked about the melody going an octave and a half higher. Because last night I worked on the vocals again and found myself going up and down with the melody more and it seemed to make the song vary more. The guitars are pushed a little louder and brought the vocals down a tad.

This is a great reply from you guys, I have been looking for serious opinions and concerns about my music and have gotten. Very pleased and can look for things in the future to work on.

Everything" and "Just a Dream" are acually two totally seperate songs. Happen to sound alike. When I was writing those two songs, I found a groove that was hard to shake, Its hard sometimes to get songs not to sound the same.

And as for is it radio quality stuff, I guess Im more referring to my talents as a musician good enough for airplay?
