Why is this stuff so expensive? A gator 2 or 3U rack unit is REALLY pricey. Up till now, i've been just stacking these units on top of eachother. But now I want to have some class! Can you make you own rack unit?

yes you can purchase the rails pre-drilled and tapped
I buy the rails at Guitar center and build custom sized cabinets to fit under the desk or workstation.
You can make the sides out of plywood, pine or nice oak or maple hardwood. anything will work, it just matters how nice you want it to look, and How much you can afford to spend.
BUT! Don't use particle board.. the ends look bad when cut unless you cover them with a piece of wood molding.
