Hey,

I've been doing some recording for a while and im starting to try to get more stuff and up my game and my studio as well.

I have a questions. In cubase i've been doing midowns by going in and clipping stuff here and there, and I wanted to start doing it in real time. Mix Automation I guess we call it.

I want to mute things, pan things, raise and lower the volume in real time and record it to something while I do that, so I dont have to go in and manually clip things here and there.

If I was to get a rack recorder, is this the piece of equipment that will allow me to save my live mixes to it?

Why not just internally send the output form cubase to a new stereo input? Just like adding a track to your mix but instead of adding a new track you are taking the old stereo output (i.e. your mix) and recording it as a new stereo track. That way it's all real time.

Cubase is capable of all of that... in fact more capable then a rack recorder... you'd wind up saving the automation data in Cubase anyway...

I only use my Mackie SDR on location, or when I'm tracking vocals in the control room, (computer's too noisy), then dump the tracks into my DAW.

Okay.. How would I go about doing that? Plus, I will be switching to Pro Tools so how will I be able to do this with Pro Tools.. Capable also?
