What is necessary gear for a Home Recording studio rack?

Whenever I find myself asking what I need to buy without knowing the answer, its because I really am not ready to buy new gear yet.

The short answer is- nothing. Perfectly good recordings have been made entirely with computer plug-ins and a DAW. However, if you intend to use outboard gear, I think the essentials are:
A good 2 channel mic preamp (add as many simultanious channels as you need)
A reverb unit or multi-FX box
A power conditioner
A compressor
An EQ unit
A Headphone distribution amp

Optional:
A noise gate
A guitar amp modeler
A Bass amp modeler

Absolutely essential:
A lava lamp-Richie

Well, heres how I want to do it..

I dont have the room(acoustically) to record guitars with mics...

So Im gonna use DI Boxes... should i get a guitar amp modler and a bass one?

Patchbay? whats that?

Power conditioner? whats that?

Compressor? someone said thats not needed

Noise gate... trying to save some money..

I have some mic pre's in the mixer im gonna get, is rack ones necessary?

Mutli-Fx is in the mixer for now..(Behringer)(yes cringe at that name)

Im not using monitors(acoustic again) so the Headphone distrubution in nesessary..

EQ Unit? 9 bar eq on mixer do I need more?

I'm not going digital effects so.. the rack gear is necessary..

I got my black light.. is the Lava lamp necessary.. lol

whenever i find myself asking what i need to buy. i never buy it from the person thats telling me what i need to get. I'm the kind of jerk that asks the guy at circuit city what i need to get and then i go and buy it from best buy.


i dont use a bass modeler...i go direct in and mess with the plugins. i do use the boss Gt-6 for a guitar modeler....mainly cause I'm a guitarist and i could care less what a bass player uses (dont mind the ego trip.). a patchbay is kinda like router or a hub for the computer. it can move a signal thats connected to it to other sources that need that signal. if you had multiple effects and didnt feel like plugging and unplugging from the mixer, it may be easier and faster to go to the patchbay. a power conditioner distributes power to whatever devices are plugged into it and will help prevent overload and short circuits. kinda like a rack mounted power strip. some also come with pull out light cylinders. do you need rack preamps if your mixer has them? no. but a rack preamp might sound better than the one on your mixer. and since your mixer is a behringer (dont worry i have one too). a small consensus here would tell you to get the DMP3 and thank them later. as for eq...i dont think so. but then again i also play with the eq plugins on my software. YES THE LAVA LAMP IS NECESSARY!
