Hi guys. So brief history of my recording career: started recording digitally first, but mixing in analogue. Then moved to digital mixer: yamaha aw1600, now on mac and logic. Now im wanting the best if boh worlds, as i got a hold of an analogue desk (studiomaster 16-4-2) and i friiiikin love it. I want more outboard gear now to acompany, i just love mixing outside the box. I love the sound.

Anyhow, outboard recommendations please?
Things to consider: im low budget, so i want whats the best for cheapest. I dont mind using cheap gear, berringer or whatever, as long as you can recommend it and tell me its great for the price or whatever. Im firstly looking for stereo compressor u its, maybe with gates and limiters built in or whatever.

I was looking at the t.bone compressor unit which looks like a good price and im fond of their stuff so far.

My price range for each unit (i would like maybe 8 stereo compression racks in total, over time) is definitly no more than £150, £200 at total definite maximum. At a push. Im looking at a tl audio mastering rack for my final processor, but im good with my mastering plugins for now fur my busses and main output.

So please, recommend. I will consider everything.

Thanks guys

RNC's are the *only* units in that price range that are worth more than a bowl of warm sinus fluid. That said, they're linked. THAT said, I'd just sum in analog and use plugs rather than use cheesy compressors...

ART Pro VLA II is also nice in the low price range. I think $299 new and can be had in the $150-$200 range used
I had an FMR audio RNC for about 8 months and just couldn't get along with it as a tracking compressor. VLA works for my personal taste, especially on vocals and bass

Nothing wrong with Either the RNC or the VLA in the price range, it's really a matter of personal taste/workflow/aesthetic.

Now if you were prepared to save up some more things can really get interesting......

Just save up a few more bucks and get the Gap Pre73. ;)

There now ..... the Gap Comp54. ;)

errrrrr, am i stupid, or is this device even available?? i cant even view a price for it on google....looks expensive to me from what ive seen but i can't find any solid information about it...

Just looking at the pictures of the GAP Comp54, it has the same cheesy VU as my old presonus TubePre. It makes it look a little cheap. And the attack only goes to 30ms? Seems like it should be a little higher. Anyway, that is my first impression from the pictures. I'm still intrigued because I really like the Pre-73.

You really don't like the RNC?

No he pointed out that it was linked. So he knows its stereo. Maybe that its not dual mono...

Right! and that means that channel one will control channel two when linked, you have really no individual control over channel two. Right? Yes.

Making it strictly a stereo compressor when using two channel simultaniously

the RNC's SuperNice mode was designed for and tested extensively with stereo program material. One of our goals was to have a 2-mix compressor that sounded good, gave some signal control and didn't cost gobs of money. So, how should you hook it up to your mix bus? Probably the best way is by hooking it into your console's stereo bus inserts. BUT, you could always take the simplest approach and just take the output of the mixer, connect it to the RNC's inputs and then connect the RNC's outputs to your monitoring system.

This is what FMR says on the subject.

This feels a lot like an argument where no one is disagreeing... it's stereo, not dual mono
