Rack Building: Assistance sought.

So I'm trying to come up with some "custom" plans to build a rack, but my math is apparently not what I was thinking it once was. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out a few of the lengths/angles? Thanks in advance.

X indicates values that I'm needing assistance with. What angle should I make the slant on the upper portion? I'm wanting 12 rack spaces on the top. After the proper angle is established, how do I go about figuring the height of the upper portion? and the depth of the top slab?

You can use trigonometry to find the measurements (pythagorean theorem and all), and do yourself a favor and pick up a roofer's square. You can probably eyeball the angle you want in terms of 3:12, 6:12 (probably more like 12:6, I'd guess)

Anyway, if you pick the angle (on the bottom right of the slanty part of your drawing), the height of the rack section is the 12u * 1.75" * sin (angle). The depth is 12u * 1.75" * cos (angle) + additional depth, which depends on the gear you want to use.

OK I see you want 23 1/2" total depth, then it is 23 1/2" - (12u * 1.75" * cos (angle)).

Remember to add space for clearances and wood dimensions.
 
That pretty much sums the majority of it up, Thanks! Would you happen to know the typical angle that manufactured racks use for the top part?
 
Establish the dimensions that you NEED to hold, due to space constraints or whatever. Then lay those out on the wood. Derive the other measurements off of your full scale layout. Lay out the angle at whatever looks best to you. Make sure you have clearance for the depth of the gear that you want to put in it.
 
When I first decided I wanted to do this, that's kinda what I was thinking, but I was more looking to find some specifics mainly because I'm an anal retentive asshat. I guess I don't really need specifics I could just go out and buy 2 60in pieces and lay the rail from the top at the angle I think I would like the best and mark it off. Sounds easier than using a calculator lol. Thanks guys!
