R. I. P. ksm27 (&ksm109)?

I noticed this in the audiofanzine news at the bottom of the page there:

discusses the new SM27 and SM137 as replacements for the KSM27 and KSM109, respectively. I looked on Shure's site, and the older mics are still there.

The article also mentions a XLR->USB adapter with headphone-jack that's being sold with SM57s and SM58s - that's a trip - Shure's site says 16bit/48khz and "coming soon".

Anyway, maybe my KSM27 will be a collector's item soon? :D
 
I'm not too surprised as AT already killed their 30 series. This is Shure's equivalent. The new SM27 is supposed to have better specs than the old (the self-noise spec looks nice). But ultimately it looks like a page from Rode and AT's playbook. I'd bet it's made overseas.

And the USB thingy, MXL and Blue already have those; it's based on a plug-n-play TI chip. Clever, but it was TI's idea, and Shure will be third to market at best.

Not to mention that they totally missed the ribbon renaissance . . .

I love Shure products, but they need to get back out in front of the curve . . . :(

Do you know why they went with 16 bits on the TI chip? Would 24 have been a lot bigger or more expensive?

The real answer is above my pay grade, but I doubt the chip was designed with a noise performance that could much exceed 16 bit anyway. The MXL I tested had a problem with some sort of noise that was not broadband--either intermod from the DC converter (for +48V) leaking into the audio, or just a dirty ground on the USB, I guess.

The interesting thing about the chip is it's actually stereo input and output, but most vendors don't seem to be taking advantage of the stereo input (without going into the full breakout box approach).
