I'm managing a R.E.M. cover project for the Murmurs.com users. I'd be glad to get some advice from you people.

http://www.remcoverproject.vpg.com.br

I use FruityLoops for bass, drums and piano, a cheap mic (works well most of the time for vocals, not so well for acoustic guitar) and n-Track for mixing.

Hope ya don't mind, bro... I'm downloading your source files to get a better idea... and maybe to create a mix...

Every generation has its idols and its representatives; to me, THESE are the classics, lol. Especially the EMI/IRS years. The thing I love the most about the early REM recordings, I think, is that Peter Buck was literally LEARNING how to play the guitar, but he made the most out of very little, in my opinion.

Okay, enough of the waxing/waning sentimental.

Texarkana - First, I'm getting some nasty digital distortion in some places. It's that sound that happens when I accidentally load a 24bit file into Winamp and try to play it...curls your toenails. This isn't that bad, but I think something's clipping, and not clipping just into distortion...but clipping into that digital domain that goes "ZAP" every once in awhile and makes you jump a bit and check your connections. Sometimes Winamp just does that when something's been limited a little too hot. I dunno'...I stick with -.3 db as a ceiling, b/c that's what mastering houses require, and I think my software has some fudge room in there to boot (hot meters).

As far as the production/performance stuff goes, you've got a cool voice. Nice job there. You've toned down the "washiness" from the original (no synths, no electrics), but that's cool...I like covers that aren't carbon copies of the original...I mean, what's the point, right? The Low E on the acoustic's a tad out of tune, but so were most of the early REM recordings. So I like the more organic feel, but I think 90% of the track is all happening in the same frequency band, and it's coming across kinda' dull. I like the acoustic sound, but cut some of the lows out of it. The bass tone is pretty God Awful; I can say this because it sounds EXACTLY like my bass tracks. Just doesn't have any definition at all...it's "fuzzy" bass, and it's walking all over the guitar and vice-versa. Other than that, I think you might benefit from cutting some lows in your vocal, b/c it's pretty fuzzy too.

Man, there's a guy around here that goes by "TripleM" whose vocal tracks sound VERY similar to the early REM recordings, and I know he rolls off a lot of lows from his vocal tracks (or I think he does anyway)...

Hey, are those other tracks available for download? I wanna' shut up and just take a shot at mixing this, lol. Not b/c I know anything, but b/c I record similar material.

Texarkana's a cool song, one of only a handful of REM's stuff I can stand :) It would be cool to get the vocal track too, as c.h. suggests...

BTW .... Chris.... happy 3000!! :p

Feel free! And if you'd like to contribute to the project, we'll give you the due credit.

I wanna' mix Texarkana...where's the vocal track?
Uh-oh, I accidentally deleted it some time ago (right after the mixdown)... I'll have to re-record it, ought to do it next Wednesday.

As I said before, feel free to contribute with tracks and/or mixes! I'm opening it to people outside Murmurs.com, because the guys there just can't find the time to.

Oh man - I may be physically compelled to record either "Rockville" or (the true classic) "Driver 8." Lemme' know if you have a preference. An example of a preference in this case would be "HEY, PLEASE DON'T RECORD A WHOLE SONG YOU JACKASS, I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR SOME MIX OPINIONS."

I can take it, lol.

If it weren't Dragon's rule, the next 30 posts would take you three minutes :)

The preference would be: "Record and (re)mix whatever you like! Just remember to contact me so that I can get the files from you to upload to my server." I have a incomplete version of Little America at the server, I'd be delighted if someone recorded a guitar for it.

Nice Avatar, Dave.

You know, I think I like the "old" REM recordings more from a nostalgic standpoint than a sonic one, to be honest. My best friend in high school was also a picker, and we'd play stuff like Rockville and Driver 8 at parties & thought we were SOOOOOoooo freaking cool for even knowing that REM existed. Good times, lol. I'm going back and listening to some of those earlier recordings right now, and I'd probably shred them if somebody posted them in here, lol.

When "Shiny Happy People" came out, (early 90's) I was married with a brand new daughter who ABSOLUTELY LOVED that song (at the age of 2) so much that I had to go buy the single (cassette, of course). Still the only single I've ever purchased.

But you're right; that violinist was a cocksocket :D

'Shiny Happy People' and other REM tunes around that time were the primary reasons I jumped ship to pop from the 'classical' world.

I was, and still am, sick and tired of being a disposable pretty bauble for the wealthy elites, who wouldn't know a f-hole from thier butthole ... I reach more people with my music in 'pop' than I ever would in classical.

If I were the MOST FAMOUS violist in the whole world, I would never be able to share my music with as many people as I can as a 'middle of the road' musician writing and performing string arrangements for po' folk like me !

Okay, I got a little optimistic b/c of a looong weekend. Reality sets in, and there's no way in Hades I can record and/or mix one of these...would have been fun, but my "would have beens" far exceed my "can dos" right now, lol.

Hey Victor...

Is your site down? I can't get to it, now... and some of the files only downloaded a few KB...

I'll try again later...

Site's still down :o

Just a quick thought on "Texarkana"...

Unless you're doing a new interpretation of the song, IMO the bassline isn't right.

The real bassline is E-G-A-B-E, (all 8ths) starting on the second 8th note of the 2nd measure...

You're playing E-G-A-B-D-E, which puts the second E on the downbeat... actually, it comes 1/8th note before the downbeat... makes it funkier (actually, one of the reasons I like the song so much)...

I'll get back to you on the mixes if/when your site comes back :)
