I'm looking for a pair of mics for location recording using a pair of preamps and minidisc or dat player. I want ro record strings mostly, from solo violin to orchestral works. I've got a good offer for the Røde NT5 mics, anyone have any advice. (or alternatives)

I'm a student, so keep it below 600$, preferably less.

Try the Mic Faq - www.hr-faq.org

Studio Projects C4 are worth a look. Massive Master posted some astonishing big-band/orchestrally type clips up recently using a pair of M-Audio Solaris, which only seem to get good reviews. Just a couple of ideas.

Yes, the NT-5's are decent mics. I believe the C-4's are better mics, and they come with a omni capsules and shock mounts for $320 or so, less than the Rodes. I did an 88 piece orchestra with a pair of C-4's recently, and it came out rather well.-Richie
