Both are the same mixes ... so you didn't miss anything, bud. :)

I'll have to listen for the swirl. I'd not noticed it. I've to a short plate on the lead vocal and a room verb on the guitar. I can pull both down a little. It might help with the swirling.

Thanks Trip!

If you aren't already...try a thicker pick and it will probably go a ways in reducing that pick noise...one of those fat plastic, purple Dunlops...or something like it.

...and mic position, of course. The pick noise is distracting.

I like those simple tunes Kevin. Write more of those. :)

I could just finger pick the part perhaps. The click is actually accentuated by the room reverb ... for on the dry track it's not as noticeable.

Okay ... I think I got it dialed in now. I paid attention to reducing the high end ... rolled back some of the room reverb, widened the sound and ... done?

In other words, I fixed the mix, I think. :)

I'd dial back the guitar verb more. I didn't notice the first time how compressed it sounded. It's kind of pushing the limit for me. I think it would sound better if it were able to breathe a little more.

Swirliness is not as bad in this version. I'm not really hearing it on the lead vocal, and just hearing a small amount on the backing vox.

The reverb is where most of the notice of the click resided. It delayed the attack just long enough to prick the ear. I've no problem taking it back further.

Argh, now that I'm listening for the pick attack, I hear it pretty heavily still. Agreed that the reverb on the guitar is making it more apparent. If I weren't specifically listening for it, it may not catch my ear so much.

Drawing my attention away from that, it's a nice concise song. Solid idea, solid performances. I love when an idea comes together quickly, and the layers build it into a nice painting.

Me too. I'm surprised you're relying on other listeners to catch this stuff. Are you getting bored with playing a part seven times till it's right?

I took Trip's advice and brought the reverb down more. I also trimmed back the low end just a bit. I'm not sure there's much more to do here ... for as you said, T ... If it wasn't specifically pointed out, you'd probably take it for what it sounded like. :)

That pick noise is just flat out displeasing...if you don't mind me saying like that. There's no real way fix that in the mix. It's a technique issue. Do the thick plastic pick thing and you'll see a fundamental difference I believe.

I did a finger pick version ... it's up on the links now. I think part of the issue is how close the mics are ... and how sensitive they are.

Ya....that's a lot better.

Now it's the string squeak that's bugging me.

Lol....just screwing with you. This guitar track fits way better into the mix. :)

Thing is? I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO SAY THAT!

What can I say? I'm not a guitarist. I didn't have thick picks just lying around.

... so I worked with what I had. My fingers.

The other odd thing is the squeak is coming from the middle finger picking the string ... which is why the squeak is rhythmic and not resulting from left hand changes ... and why I said (both with pick noise and finger squeak) that the challenge may be that the mics are simply placed a little too close to source and catch ALL the sound going on a bit too up close and personal. :)
