A while back I brought a Focusrite trackmaster to go with my Tascam DP-01FX and I have recently purchased a SE Electronics 2200A condenser mic and the sound is great.

As I am fairly new to home recording is , is it good to use the faders when doing vocals i.e when singing in my higher register is it good to use the individual fader during mixdown when my voice gets louder?, i already use minimum compression for vocals.

This might seem a silly obvious question but I have no experiance in sound engineering or wacthed engineers in action
Is this a known practice for enginers?

I am much happier with the overall sound I am getting obviously through trail and error.

How are things your end.

I always nudge the faders in the mixing stage before I add my second compression (I use a little on the way in) to make sure every word is audible.

It works great for me. ;)

I'm using the Focusrite Penta with my Rode NT1000 mic. I've been looking at getting a second condenser mic and have heard great things about the SE one... Have you tested it against any others?

Yes, it is. It's called "riding the faders", and it's a common and basic technique for audio engineers.

Far too many amateurs forego this technique (along with "level automation", with is a way to program and automate "riding the faders" in software) and instead squash their tracks into a single volume with a compressor. And then they come on here and ask why they can't get their tracks to "sit right" in the mix. ;)

While there's nothing wrong with the proper use of compressors, they should *never* be used as a substitute for dynamic level control. Ride those faders, lean to master their use both technically and creatively. You're on the right track.
