ok i have a few questions on mics and studio stuff because i am a complete newbie.

1. concerning drum mics, if you have 7 drum mics how can you use them all if you only have an audio interface with 6 microphone inputs? is there anyway to cut down the number of mic inputs needed but use the same number of mics? how do real recording studios do it?

2. What kind of room would be best for recording a band? Is a garage more proferable than a room in your house, and how do would different material like having would walls or carpeted floors affect the sound of the band? What do real recording studios have in there rooms that make them sound so clear and nice?

3. what are the best mics for the following: a. Guitar b. Bass c. vocals

4. Any other tips for a beginner trying to make the best of his surroundings to record?

Thanx a lot

1) typically go to a mixer first then to your recorder. most folks in the home realm are using three or four mics with very nice results, (do a search on mic placement or recorder man method)
2)Rooms that have been acoustically treated anf tested provide the best results as they present no standing waves or bass waves( not the right term but it escapes me... nodes thats it) which interfere with recording ( do a search on acoustic treatment) http://www.truesoundcontrol.com/pro...RAW=bass traps&OVKEY=bass trap&OVMTC=standard
3)Guitar , you mean cabs or acoustic? cabs are being captured by everyone with everything sm 57, beta, senn 421, ribbons, sdc'c , ldc's , etc
acoustics are mostly grabbed with sdc's though in a mix an ldc works great
Bass cabs- re20, atm 25, sm7, lots of others, or DI
Vox - Any mic out there SP b1 is getting used by a lot of newbs (not just newbs but entry level gear) CAD and Pelusa and Rode and Audio Technica etc etc
\4) Without knowing more about your room, signal chain, technique and expertise it would be foolish to offer more advive than ...... Say it with me.......do a search There's tons of useful info here from very knowledgeable folks that have answered many questions and spent valuable timne here just helping out other gearheads ...God Bless 'em all!
just stumbled on this http://www.recording.org/ftopict-9909-sonixx.html

Research a lot, buy once. Not the other way around. Im still learning this one...
