Questions on computer mixing

Okay, so I decided for the time being and mostly money constraints I"m going to use my computer as a mixer. So the question is.....what all do I need?

Obviously I need mixing software.....but what is good? I know of Cakewalk, Guitar Tracks, Home Studio, Tascam and a few others.

Now the next question is how to get the sound into the computer. Right now I'm thinking bass and guitar. I know I could mic amps or run direct. If I run direct I'll need a new soundcard, correct, since I'll have to have 1/4" inputs?

Is there anything I missed?????
