Like everyone else I want to now get a digital recorder (currently using Cubase VST).
The VS 1824 looks okay but no one in any shop seems to want to tell me why it is better than the Fostex VF160 or Akai DPS16.
Does anyone know if the signal in gets compressed, and if you turn the compression off how much recording time U have left at 44.1kHz?

And - can you output the signals seperately - ie as wavs to cubase for more post-production or would U not need to?

I would be grateful for any response from a VS user. I'm looking to do live bands with it.

Your questions are a bit too general. Roland units do use compression--how much depends on the recording mode. But IMHO, the "compressed" sound is so slight that it shouldn't factor in your decision. Plus, the recording time depends on the size of your HD, but again, these drives nowadays are so large that running out space isn't really a problem if you archive and back up your work (which you should do anyway).

Others may disagree, but you've got a shit-hot digital recorder in the roland unit. Most would agree that the Yamaha 4418 and its brother and the Roland VS units are the way to go for standalone DAW recording. I don't know much about the Fostex or Akai, but you'll find there are a lot of very, very satisfied 1824 owners out there.
