Hello, I have been using a tascam 788 but since I need to master on the PC anyway, I figured i would do everything on it since I have 70gb free on my hard drive. I have a few questions about going about a setup.

The PC has 256mb ram, given that I would likely be working on one 5 minute piece at a time with around 8 tracks (maybe a few more), do you think I am okay with the memory?

Also, I am deciding between a Us-122 and one of the Edirol's maybe a Ua-25 (right number?), my only requirement is having a decent mic preamp. The midi interface would be nice, in terms of sequencing, but I figure i might be playing each track from the keyboard (Motif) in seperate.

In terms of software, I was looking at Magix Music Studio, i use a low end version of Magix Music Maker which actually improves my 788 mixes through normalizing. Do people prefer Cakewalk Home Studio instead? thanks for your assistance.

256Mb is low on memory; consider going much higher (I use 512Mb)

Some people swear by USB, but others have problems. Too much depends on the drivers and high data flow working with USB, which was designed for keyboard and mouse driving. Think about a real PCI card or Firewire, but you pays your money and takes your luck. I've heard good stuff about the Cubase System 4 USB setup, but it's new on the market (and it comes with CubaseSE, which would take care of your sequencer needs nicely).

If you want to go cheaper, also consider N-Track Studio (www.ntrack.com) I've used it for several years and am very happy with it. You can download a free demo and try it out...
