Hey,

I bought a 488 a while ago second hand. It didn't come with any instructions so I was hoping someone here would be able to help me out with some of the features.

1) How do you punch in/out? There are all the buttons underneath the display that look like they should do it but no matter how much I mess around with them I can't seem to make it work.

2) What is the pre-amp like on the 488? i.e. when I plug a condensder mic into it, will it make as much noise as a normal mic? What sort of results can I expect?

3) What type of tape do people use? I know you're supposed to use type II and that 60 mins tape is better than 90 (how much better?), but is it worth getting real high-quality tape? Does such a thing exist? How much would I expect to pay for it?

4) How do I use the effects loop?

5) Is it true that when it very first came out the 488 cost £1000+?

Sorry to bombard you all with questions, what with this being my first post and all. Hopefully someone can help me out.

Cheers

Hey,

Thanks for the link, I read through it and went to the online manual link but they don't have the 488. I was just wondering if anyone had any personal experience with the 488 and could help me out?

:D Yo Digital Killowatts: ;)

I've had two 488s. They ran around 8 or 900 USDs, plus shipping. It is a good box as I've taken many tapes and remastered them on my digital SIAB.

Also, I have the 488 manual. Even better, I've got a copy of it I made for someone who never bought it. If you're interested in buying this copy, post here and I'll send you a Personal note. However, I'm sure there is someplace you can download it.

The effects loop requires you connect 1/4 inch cables into your FX unit, and then run it through effects sends on the back of your recorder. As I recall, there is room to use two effects boxes on the unit which is what I used to do. More variety that way.

When you record, say, two tracks on the the 488, you need to put those tracks in the CUE mode in order to continue overdubbing tracks. If you don't do that with each recorded track, you will lose sound, tracks, and nothing good will happen. Once you have all the tracks recorded, you mix them down into two track stereo as you run it into a DAT or a tape deck or a CD device.

Punch in/out, I never did that -- not a good feature on the 488 so I just redid the faulty track.

I'll have a Laphroig neat.

Green Hornet ;) :p :D

Oops!

Sorry about that.

I do have a pdf of it on my computer so if you pm me your e-mail address, I'll send it to you.

Cheers! :)
